Free Music Review: Finally On CD!

It's been a long, long wait for this album to be released on CD. Was it worth the wait? In a word...YES! If for no other reason than to complete the Partridge Family catalog on CD. So, at long last the final Partridge platter is on CD.
The packaging faithfully recreates the original album to perfection. Albeit just smaller. Lisa Sutton continues her great liner notes that began with the first Partridge CD reissue. She has now compiled notes for all of the albums except the Christmas album.
For those unfamiliar with this release, here's a bit of background. By the time Crossword Puzzle and Bulletin Board were released, the Partridge Family TV show was entering its twilight. Season three consisted of new songs from Crossword Puzzle, Notebook and a few left over tracks from Shopping Bag. As the show entered its fourth and final season, things were looking a bit shakey on the Partridge front. The show was moved from its comfortable Friday night time slot to a Saturday time slot. Ricky Segall was brought in so the show could continue to appeal to the preteen set. A move that many have marked as the moment the show 'jumped the shark.' David Cassidy had made it known that he would be leaving the show by mid season (but he stayed until the end of the season). He had gotten tired of the squeeky clean image of Keith Partridge and his well known disdain for the songs he was forced to record for the show. However, Cassidy took a much more active role in the music side and the songs on the final Partridge album reflect this. The songs are a bit more adult. Bulletin Board was released a few weeks prior to the start of the fourth season and several of the songs were featured in several episodes of the show's fourth season. Sales of Bulletin Board were well below expectations. A trend that had begun with the previous releases, Crossword Puzzle and Notebook. The downward trend may be attributed to the lack of Cassidy's face being dispalyed prominatly on both Notebook and Crossword Puzzle. Bulletin Board continued the trend and sales for the album quickly sank like a stone. Which is sad because I find most of the songs on Bulletin Board to be some of the best (and most fun) songs in the entire Partridge Family catalog.
The first three tracks (Money Money, Roller Coaster, Lookin' For A Good Time) start the album off with a bang. In fact, Lookin' For A Good Time was released as the one and only single from the album. True it went nowhere, but it's a fun, fast and furious song. David Cassidy's vocals on this album are some of the best he ever recored at the time. In spite of the fact that he didn't particulary like any of the Partridge Family songs at the time, he was professional enough to give each and every song his all. It's what made David Cassidy the #1 teen idol of the 70's. If not of all time. I think my favorite track on the album is I Wouldn't Put Nothin' Over On You. It another really bouncy fun song that I could listen to a hundred times. In fact I'd go so far as to say that musically, Bulletin Board is the best Partridge Family album of them all.
The two bonus tracks from Shirley Jones are nice enough songs. And it is nice to have Ain't Love Easy (from a season 3 episode), but I felt they were out of place on the album.
All in all, the final Partridge Family album delivers some really fun and at times, some of the best music the series had to offer. I'm so glad that David Cassidy has finally made his peace with his Partridge past. His influence on Bulletin Board's musical direction is very clear and it helps to propel what could have been just a mediocre album to a great album. Again, even though that this is, sadly, the last album by the Partridges, in my opinion they went out on a high note. I'm so glad that this has finally been released on CD. My Partridge CD collection (just like my vinyl collection) is now complete.
Now if only we could get someone to release all of the songs that were in the show but never released on vinyl to compile a CD of those songs, then the Partridge Family catalog would trully be complete.
