Free Music Notes for The Phantom of the Opera (2004 Movie Soundtrack)

Free Music Review: Holds its own quite well
Hit: 5 Stars

I have the original London cast CD and now this one. The many reviews here delve deep into each selection, and their strengths and weaknesses. So I'll just add my general impressions:

The movie itself was absolutely wonderful, and I can't wait to get the DVD. One is reminded of the film when listening to the music, so they are intertwined in a way.

Gerard Butler has a fine voice, deep and perfect for the Phantom. He doesn't have a tremendous range, but his voice does justice to the role. And his acting in the film was very good; he showed real range there. He is the center of the film, and he can carry it off.

Patrick Wilson's voice in my opinion matches his name; mild and insipid. He's somewhat credible as an actor, and the chemistry between Emmy Rossum's Christine is believable. However, I felt he just didn't have much power in his voice, and the lack showed.

Emmy Rossum has a fine, sweet voice and was quite up to the challenge of Christine. She's a fine actress, too, and of course extremely pretty.

And a word for Jennifer Ellison who plays Meg Giry, Christine's best friend and daughter of the woman who takes the Phantom in after he escapes from the freak show. What a pretty girlish voice.

I first got the movie at blockbuster as an impulse buy. It literally changed my life (for the best and worst). My family is mad that I am so obsessed with it, but then again, I am glad I appreciate great music like Andrew Lloyd Webber's.
So, after I saw the movie and loved it, I decided to get the soundtrack (this shorter version). I listen to it nearly every day. I loved Emmy Rossum's clear and beautiful voice. And Gerard Butler's is deep and threatening, yet still sounds pitiful in his weak moments. Patrick Wilson did a great job too, (although I love Gerard Butler a lot more!). This soundtrack never gets old. I relive my feelings and thoughts all over again while listening to it. Now I am going to upgrade and get the 2 disc version.
Also, after hearing it so many times and reading theses reviews, I decided to listen to the Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford version. I totally did not like it. Sarah Brightman gave me a headache and Michael Crawford sounded puny and like he was...well, puny. So, I would say if you wanted the main songs, you should get this cd. I really enjoy listening to it and if you loved the movie (like everyone has said) you'll love the soundtrack too because it is ..like the same music as in the movie! Haha...BUY IT!

First I'd like to say that I am not rating this a perfect 5 because I'm Gerard Butler fan. I never even heard of him until the motion picture for Phantom. And where I live, all the original casting CD's were left on the shelf while I had to look for weeks before I could find a store with the Movie soundtrack in stock. Whoever it was that wrote that biased review grates on my nerves for being so assumptious.

Having heard the original cast soundtrack before the original movie soundtrack, I have to say I like the movie soundtrack a lot more. I must say the voice of the Phantom in the original cast is better trained, but the voice for Christine's character sounds strange, for lack of a better word.

I'll admit when I first saw the movie I thought Gerard's voice was a little weak, but after reaching some of those high notes, and hearing the power of emotion in his singing I prefer him over the original casting. And yes, his voice has an amazing and compelling, even sexy quality to it--when I hear his voice I need to stop what I'm doing and not even dare to move or breathe until it's over. The same goes for Emmy Rossum's voice. Impecable range, and such a sweet sound to it. Both their voices combined really takes you somewhere else.

Free Music Review: Soundtrack better than Original Cast Recording
Hit: 5 Stars

I own both the movie soundtrack and the original London cast recording.

Without a doubt, the movie soundtrack is better musically. Almost across the board, the vocalist are better in the movie. One can reasonably disagree whether the movie Christine is better that the London Chistine, even though I prefer the movie. And one might prefer Michael Crawford over the movie's Phantom, although at least I find the movie Phantom more consistent. And I prefer his deeper more threatening voice, which is more consistent with the character. Crawford's quality ranges high to medium in the London recording, and sometimes he just doesn't sound as evil as he is, even when the song calls for it.

The movie's Meg is far better, although it is a small role musically. In the London recording, when Meg visits Christine in the chapel, her voice is weak and tinny.

Many of my objections to the London recording may be with the recording, and not the vocalist. It seems in part as if the vocalist were not recorded well, either too far from the microphone or off their best for that day.

Regardless of the reason, if you want to buy only one recording, buy the movie soundtrack. However, I am glad I have both.

Free Music Review: Phantom of the Opera CD is a must for fans
Hit: 5 Stars

Hello, this is my first review...
I thouroughly think that this CD is a great investment. After seeing the play, and buying that CD, I know that the movie would be just as good.
If you have seen the play, and hope for just as much beauty in the movie for the music, I say it is better.
Emmy is in my opinion better than the play. Her voice is clear and strong, and she doesn't waste herself on bad-sounding vibrattos. However, the play is a masterpeice all on it's own.
The Phantom, however, is a little bit ruined, (Not because of his excellent job...) but because he is supposed to be a man who is just, eh... In the movie, he is very good looking, which leaves my sister wondering why Christine didn't just love him instead.
The vocals are great. I am a budding artist in the voice and I know how hard it is to reach 50% of the notes that all of the singers sing clearly.
The single thing all should know about this, is that it isn't opera music. It is new-age er... Orchistra music with vocal accompanyment. The song with the most music is most likely Masquerade, but the music is interesting, and different.
I think that generally anyone who liked the play or movie would love this CD
