Free Music Review: Colm Wilkinson: Phantom of the Opera
Hit: 5 Stars

All I can say is...WOW!! I was introduced to the Phantom of the Opera through this CD, and it certainly is evident when one listens to Music of the Night. Colm Wilkinson is an amazing singer. It still amazes me on how he can make you believe that the role of the Phantom was actually written for him. He hits all the notes correctly, and puts his soul into it, which the novel says Erik does. He and Rebecca Caine are also an incredible duo. Later, I heard the OLC version, and that was also a great CD. Hearing Michael Crawford second really put him at odds with Colm in my opinion, and it took a long time for me to adjust to his voice. However, I look at both and I see two different interpretations of Erik, each magnificent in his own way. Colm has the emotion, range, pain, rage, and commanding, charismatic voice that is needed for the role. Michael Crawford has different qualities, nailing the seductiveness and love, seemingly more of a calmer version of the Phantom, who knows how to become enfuriated! I prefer Colm as Erik without a shadow of a doubt, but I listen to both evenly. I love both, as each individually shows the different sides of the characters, with emphasis on the Phantom, of course. The sides of Erik are like the sides of Jekyll/Hyde. Listening to different versions of that can also give mixed feelings as to how is better in the role. If you can, pick up this one and the double disc version with Crawford as the Phantom. They are both excellent. The orchestral arrangement in the OLC version, in my opinion, is the better of the two, although this one has its moments. Rebecca Caine surprised me with her range. My goodness!! She changes the ending of Think of Me by going up a scale to a really high note instead of jumping around easily and gracefully from note to note as Sarah does. Both are very talented. As far as voice goes, this one goes to Sarah. She just seems a bit more comfortable with the role, and gives a sense of curiosity and fear towards the Phantom that Rebecca doesn't always get across. And Raoul, this guy has the range for the role, but nothing behind it. He doesn't get into the role as much as Steve Barton. Note that I don't think too highly on Raoul's character, so that's why I'm not commenting too much on him, because he always came across (to me) as a guy with a self-centered, self-sympathetic attitude.

This version of Phantom is a great CD, worthy of a double disc, full version set, but it works as long as Music of the Night and Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again are on there. In fact, this CD was not scheduled to be made at all, because of the success of the original. They were afraid it wouldn't do as well, or that it would surpass the original. The powers at be argued that Colm Wilkinson was an excellent Phantom and deserved to be recognized in the role he created, so the recording company said they could record one disc's worth of music. (I say that Colm created the role because he was the first person to actually perform in the role. Once Andrew Lloyd Webber finished writing the musical, he wanted to hear it, and the only cast nearby was the cast of Les Miserables, so he asked the managers if he could borrow the cast for a couple performances of his new musical. Colm was chosen by Webber to play the role of the Phantom, and after the first initial shows, shown to a select audience, Les Miserables went on touring and ALW hired Michael Crawford for the role. For more detail on this, see the book THE COMPLETE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA by George Perry.) In this version of the musical, some of the lyrics are changed, such as on the last part of the last track! It sounds more like it's out of the book than the original version. In my opinion, both Phantoms are excellent, but Colm just really puts himself into the role, as he did with ValJean. His commanding voice carries throughout the play, and he is what I would expect the Phantom to sound like. In fact, judging by the book, from Leroux, for the perfect Phantom, you would need to combine the gentle, more docile, and seductive aspects of Michael Crawford with the power, authority, pain, and rage, among other emotions, of Colm Wilkinson. Then, you would have as close of a Phantom as one could get. As far as Christine, I would stay with Sarah, as she seems to know a little more about how to change her voice for each part of the musical. Rebecca does too, but not to the extent needed for this role. As for Raoul, I would say Steve Barton is the best, hands down, as this Raoul represents what I think of the actual character, and Barton does a superb job at showing the true feelings of Raoul. If you really want (in my opinion) the best Phantom, chose this version of the Operetta. If you want more well known production, a fuller orchestra, a more intriguing Christine, and a more close-to-the-book Raoul (and the complete libretto) get the OLC double disc version. Although the Canadian version has all the lyrics to its own recording (as some lyrics do change slightly), the complete Libretto is with the double disc version. In my opinion, I would purchase this CD first, and then, after you've enjoyed what this recording has to offer, buy the double disc version to hear the complete performance. That way, you have the better of both halves, and the debate of who is better is left to you.

A few years after The Phantom of the Opera debuted in London, Harold Prince unveiled Andrew Lloyd Webber's gothic musical in Canada, in 1989. It was so good that this recording of highlights from the Canadian cast is--dare we say it?--more enjoyable than the equivalent London cast highlights album. No, it doesn't have the authenticity of London principals Sarah Brightman (for whom then-husband Lloyd Webber wrote the role of Christine) and Michael Crawford, but it doesn't have their idiosyncrasies, either, and it does have the richer voices of Colm Wilkinson and Rebecca Caine (who played Jean Valjean and older Cosette, respectively, in the 1985 London cast of Les Misérables). At 69 minutes, the Canadian album is also 10 minutes longer than the London, allowing inclusion of the prologue and dress rehearsal for Hannibal. Of course, Lloyd Webber's melodies--"Angel of Music," "The Music of the Night," "All I Ask of You," "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again"--are scrumptious on any continent. --David Horiuchi
