Free Music Notes for The Phantom of the Opera (The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Free Music Review: Refreshing!
Hit: 5 Stars

I love Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman, but am glad that they weren't chosen for roles in this movie. Sarah Brightman is too old now to come off as a very young woman who is really just coming of age. And Michael Crawford is also quite old. Both of them said that they would not have liked to be in this movie- MC said he would never reprise his role of Phantom ever again, and SB admitted that she was too old for the role and that she had moved on to a different part of her career.

Gerard Butler, Patrick Wilson, and Emmy Rossum give Phantom a breath of fresh air. After so long of listening to the OLC, which I do love dearly, this is a nice change. I personally don't find anything really wrong with any of the leads. I can understand how one might be disappointed perhaps, or would have had different people sing, but I really don't understand how anyone could say that any of the leads simply cannot sing or anything to that effect. Each to their own, though, I guess.

Emmy Rossum does start off perhaps a little weak. I don't think her Think of Me sounds bad, but its definately one of the poorer songs in this recording. She does sound a little odd in Angel of Music, and she sounds strained in All I Ask of You. HOWEVER, I personally feel she is FANTASTIC in everything else. She's great in the title song, and there's something about her voice in Why Have You Brought Me Here/Raoul, I've Been there that makes me want to listen to that song over and over again, lol! She's also really great sounding in all of the second disc, especially in her GORGEOUS rendition of Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again and her emotional Twisted Every Way. On top of that, I think she will come off on screen really well.

Patrick Wilson is the perfect Raoul to me. He sounds so arrogant in Little Lotte, but then he does seem to really care for Christine. I think he's perfect. :D

Gerard Butler, I do like also. I think he's got a naturally good voice (not the best voice ever, but a good voice nonetheless) and I think its amazing that he only had a year of vocal training. HE SOUNDS NOTHING LIKE ANY STAGE PHANTOM YOU HAVE SEEN OR WILL EVER SEE. That's because this is a movie, not a stage show. His voice works perfectly for the movie. I wouldn't want to see him live, but I am DYING to see him in the movie. He has such emotion and passion; he's very scary as well. He is the perfect movie Phantom in my opinion. Yes, he is handsome, but he's got Erik's (the Phantom's) true self figured out and portrays that almost perfectly. His interpretation is a great one. He sings with such passion and raw emotion that I just fall in love with him. The only reason I really miss Michael Crawford in this recording is I think he had a hint of sarcasm in his lines that Butler does not have; rather, where Crawford is sarcastic (i.e. "A toad, madame?"), Butler is deadly threatening. I prefer the sarcasm, but the threatening tone is also very effective. I also feel that Butler's Music of the Night just has great imagery, that his Point of No Return is FABULOUS (not to mentino sexy-sounding :P), and that all of his commanding lines (i.e. "In the new production of Il Muto, you will therefore cast Carlotta as the pageboy...") especially one right after Emmy Rossum's amazing Twisted Every Way ("Seal my fate tonight, I hate to have to cut the fun short...") are delivered with absolute perfection. What can I say? I adore his interpretation.

Margaret Preece does a fabulous job dubbing Minnie Driver, she's probably my favorite recorded Carlotta. The managers are hilarious. I really dislike the actress playing Meg Giry, however she comes of really, really well on this recording and I think she'll be great in this role, despite what I think of her personally. Miranda Richardson sounds quite strange, really weird and creepy. Not my favorite Madame Giry, but I think it works. I really liked the way the prologue was done, too. Also, the one thing about this CD that I find definately better than the Original London Cast is that its much easier to understand what's being said; on any number with more than two or three people (or any number with Carlotta in it), I would have to be glued to my libretty trying to follow the lyrics. In this CD, the lines are much easier to understand (almost making up for the lack of libretto in the special edition CD).

THE ORCHESTRATIONS COULD NOT POSSIBLY BE BETTER; IMO, ITS WORTH BUYING THE CD IF ONLY FOR THE INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC!

Also, I think that these actors will display fine ability on screen. I think its sad if someone won't see the movie because of the soundtrack, as its easier to understand why they said something a certain way when watching it on scren. I don't think that a soundtrack can be FULLY judged until the movie is released.

Overall, this is a more than decent English recording. If you're only going to buy one Phantom of the Opera CD, see if you can't listen to both the Original London Cast and this CD before buying. Some people will definately prefer the OLC, but I think some will also prefer this disc. As for me, I honestly like them both equally, and dislike comparing them because they are two very different but quite good interpretations.

The Phantom of the Opera (The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) Poster

The Phantom of the Opera (The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) 2 CD Deluxe Collector's Edition, contains all of the music from the single disc plus other original score material featured in the film.
For better or worse, Andrew Lloyd Webber's adaptation of Gaston Leroux's gothic horror/romance novel has done for stage musicals what Spielberg's Jaws did for fish stories, with worldwide sales of its original cast album approaching 25 million. While director Joel Schumacher's film turns on his typically ambitious visual verve, its new film soundtrack recording has been paradoxically focused in scope, yet beefed up dynamically via the brawny presence of a hundred piece orchestra and the London Boys Choir. This deluxe, double-disc version showcases all of Phantom's key songs, with Gerard Butler imparting a welcome, youthful sensuality to his Phantom, making a fine foil for Emmy Rossum's ever-conflicted Christine. Original show orchestrator David Cullen has fashioned compelling new contemporary arrangements to frame Webber's songs--which now conclude with the lilting, upbeat new ballad he wrote for the film, "Learn to Be Lonely," sung by Minnie Driver. --Jerry McCulley
