Free Music Review: "It's booty-kickin' time!"

"The City of Soundsville: Music from the Powerpuff Girls" is certainly a nontraditional TV soundtrack album. Rather than take straightforward music cues from Cartoon Network's hit superhero comedy, the producers of "Soundsville" have instead taken music cues and mixed them together with dialogue snippets into funky little dance pop tracks. The result is much like the TV show itself: an effective mixture of excitement and hilarity. Composing credit goes to James L. Venable, Steven Rucker, and Thomas Chase, while credit for dialogue and album concept go to series creator Craig McCracken.For the most part, each track is based on one of the familiar characters or locales from the series: Pokey Oaks Kindergarten, the Professor, Mojo Jojo, Princess, etc. There are also remixed versions of the opening and closing themes. But my favorite tracks are probably the three focusing on the Girls themselves. "Blossom" captures the character's bossy self confidence; "Buttercup" evokes the spirit of this quintessential tough girl; and the delightfully surreal "Bubbles" mirrors the blonde cutie's sweetness and effervescent optimism. "Soundsville" is one of those CDs that actually seems to get better each time I listen to it, and as a Powerpuff fan, I can say that the CD never fails to put a smile on my face.
