Free Music Review: It's Better Than That.
Hit: 5 Stars

Many reviewers, while ecstatic about the show, have been a bit condescending about the music. The songs have been called "servicable" and "undistinguished," functioning mainly as settings for the brilliant lyrics.

I think the music is just overshadowed by the comedy. I saw the show in Chicago during its opening weekend. It is the single funniest thing I have ever seen in the theater, which is where most people get confused. It's been so long since we've had a musical COMEDY that people believe that the music *must* overshadow the script. Doesn't happen here. "The Producers" wants to get the loudest, longest, ceaseless laughs in Broadway history, and as far as I can tell, it succeeds brilliantly. So much so that the music seems "pleasant but unremarkable."

If it is unremarkable, why, after playing the CD a couple of times, does one find "Prisoners of Love", "Til Him", "If You've Got It Flaunt It", "Springtime for Hitler" (of course; especially with its Hitler-as-Judy-Garland take), "Guten Tag Hop-Clop", "That Face" and especially "Have You Ever Heard the German Band" popping willy nilly into one's head?

The lyrics are wonderful and the music is classic Broadway. This show will outlast "Phantom of the Opera" (... .)

Free Music Review: He ruined my Marriage {the 2ND one!} .....
Hit: 5 Stars

It don't know whether to thank or sue him, but Mr. B. inadvertently ruined my second marriage, something to do with "Blazing Saddles ...." ANYHOO! This glorious tribute to RKO 1936 or thereabout musicals, well makes up for everything!

What Joy, to at last see this cornerstone yukfest turned into an American Musical, "Boo Hoo" to Sir Andrew, the Phantoms [though we appluaded and warbled along] have left the bulding! AND it's not a rehashing of the movie, there are just a few little differences......

Favourites? "When you got it, Flaunt it" - reminds slightly of "Gotta have a Gimmick", but what the "*!#", isn't that what it's all about? Also, naturally, "Keep it Gay", superb timing and ensemble work from the guys. "Der Guten Tag Hop Clop"? Nice, perhaps when it hits the screen [and it should] we could have an additional "Here's to de Boys in Brazil" or "The Shickelgruber Stomp"?

Oy, der fuhrer wud be zo prout! [Imagine the opening night...] As Mr. B. says "Say it with wit!" Now, I guess it's just inevitable that a Saddam musical will follow? No, there was that song from "Hair" though.....

This CD is "Must have" territory!

Free Music Review: When you got it, Flaunt it...
Hit: 5 Stars

This soundtrack is the culmination of Mel Brook's best work yet. I bought it after I'd seen the movie many times, but before I saw the play. From listening, you can tell the basic story line and where it is different from the movie, and you can completely fall in love with the characters.
Of course, stars Lane and Broderick make the show the great one that it is. The pair does a wonderful job singing and each time I listen to it I can tell they put all their energy into each song. Nathan Lane especially, with his show stopper "Betrayed" near the end, delivers a performance you'll want to listen to over and over.
There is also the wonderful supporting cast, Gary Beach, Roger Bart, Cady Huffman, and Brad Oscar who help to make this CD so wonderful. I fell in love with them the first time I heard it.
The wonderful cast and crew of The Producers pulled together to make a show which won a record winning 11 Tonys, and the soundtrack is a must buy. Certainly it will make you laugh, but the sincerity and love put into many of the songs is very touching as well. Whether you're a Brooks fan or a Broadway fan in general, you will love this soundtrack...

Free Music Review: Hysterical !
Hit: 5 Stars

I was fortunate enough to see "The Producers" with Nathan Lane & Matthew Broderick shortly after it's premiere. The show was absolutely hysterical, with a really strong score. Nothing against Mr. Broderick, but Mr. Lane's part is larger & has the best songs. He totally deserved the Tony for Best Actor that year.

Musically, the production contains more songs than a typical score, with strong voices and orchestrations. Best tracks include:

The King Of Broadway
I Wanna Be A Producer
Keep It Gay
When You Got It, Flaunt It
Along Came Bialy
Springtime For Hitler
Betrayed [Lane's "tour de force" recap of the show]

While I wouldn't call this the best show to grace the stage (though it won the most Tonys ever & NY critics tripped over themselves in praise), it is fantastic & came at a time when the Great White Way was taking itself way too seriously. Also, it was too bad that "The Full Monty" did not share in the victories of that season. Timing is everything!

Nonetheless, one of the best scores ever!

Free Music Review: A Gem
Hit: 5 Stars

Mel Brooks has done it! This C.D. contains some of the most hilarious lyrics and the most upbeat music. Although I have never seen the show, (and chances are slim that I will see it) this recording is enough to make me laugh. The definate highlights are "I Wanna be a Producer"(it perfectly explains the feelings of anyone who has dreamed of being in the show business), "Keep it Gay" (very funny!), and, of course, "Springtime for Hitler"(the best spoof of a Broadway show that I have ever heard). Nathan Lane gives a riveting performance as the greedy Max Bialystock. His comical timing is perfect. Matthew Broderick is adorable as the shy and bumbling Leo Bloom. Other great artists that are featured in this recording are Cady Huffman as the sexy, but a little clueless Ulla and Gary Beach as the flamboyantly homosexual Roger De Bris (who actually ends up playing Hitler). This CD will always remain one of my favorites. With great music and lyrics that will put a listener into hysterics, this show will go down in history as one of the great musical comedies!
