Free Music Notes for The Producers (2001 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: The Producers produces! Hit: 5 Stars
Many years ago I pictured how I might adapt The Producers into a Broadway play; I might've turned Leo into Leona Bloom and had her have a crush on Max. Well (thankfully) Mel Brooks beat me to it, adapting his own film for the Broadway stage, at last.I bought the CD almost as soon as it came out, Spring 2001, and played it faithfully. The music has verve, the cast is hilarious, and it's fun to sing along too. Apart from the satire, the Broadway musical play rides high on the hope and dream of MAKING IT BIG, a desire any aspiring artist can understand. I saw the play September 14, 2001 (taking advantage of the September 11 fallout), where Brad Oscar replaced the ailing Nathan Lane as Max Bialystock. Perhaps by then I knew too much about the show to be surprised, but I was glad I went! Warning: a certain F word is shouted in one of the first songs. And there are enough ethnic stereotypes abounding to insult everybody--but that's Mel Brooks for you!
Free Music Review: it won 11 (if im correct) TONY awards for a reason! Hit: 5 Stars
This is by far the funniest thing I have ever seen. I got the chance to see it on broadway with Lane (unfortunatly not Broderick) and most of the original cast. For some reason, certain people seem to think this play is racist. First off, the whole thing is pure 100% SATIRE. I'm 15 and I can realize that. Also, are you aware that Mel Brooks is jewish? Yeah, so lighten up. I realize what Hitler did, and it will never be forgotten. But my God, get a sense of humor. In case you never saw the play, the Bavarian guy breaks his leg (making "It's bad luck to say good luck on opening night funny) and is replaced by the gay director for the song "Springtime for Hitler". ITS HILARIOUS! BROOKS MADE HITLER A GAY GUY! And why do you think he did that? Geeze... just lighten up!
So about the CD...awesome. I love these songs, and I am very much looking forward to seeing the movie version of the musical coming out in late December! GO SEE IT!
Free Music Review: Keep it light, Keep it bright..... Hit: 5 Stars
In the song "Keep it Gay", Brooks clearly articulates what's wrong with theatre these days. Who wants to go see a boring drama? Who wants to go see a musical that has tunes that are forgettable (for example, Les Miserables?) What is missing from the theatre in the early 21st century is an unbridled sense of fun. Theatre folk these days seem to want to make a point, or purposely offend people. Mel Brooks has turned 21st Century Theatre around! (Praise God!) Mel Brooks has showed us again that it can be FUN to attend the Theatre. He showed us that show songs can once again be memorable and catchy. At a time in our history when we are bombarded with depressing news of shootings, bombings, political scandals and severe depression seems to be an epidemic Mel Brooks has uplifted our spirits and showed us how much fun a song can be. He has made us laugh again, and for that we should all be eternally thankful. Thanks Mel!
Free Music Review: Mit a Zetz, Mit a Zing, Mit a Bing Bang Bing Bang Boom! Hit: 5 Stars
What more can one say about "The Producers?" Its flagship song, "Springtime for Hitler" was just over three minutes long in the movie, and has been expanded to just over eight minutes in the Broadway show. Is this a "gut" thing? By and large, ya, although Hitler's monologue could have been cut a bit. Nevertheless, it remains the most hilarious eight minutes ever shown on stage.Other high points include the Al Jolson takeoff, "Haben Sie Gehort das Deutsche Band," which one can enjoy without understanding ein wort of Deutsch, "In Old Bavaria," and "The Siegfried Oath" to Adolf (Elizabeth!) Hitler (who was descended from a long line of English Queens). And, of course, "Keep it Gay." Note that most of the songs in the soundtrack were not part of the movie. Fortunately, this treasure is a CD, for if it were a record or a tape, we long would have worn it out.
