I have been a huge White Stripes fan for years, but was resistant to listening to other Jack White projects. I didn't dig the initial single "Rock Steady" and thought it was kind of Jack "Lite". I was wrong. After purchasing the latest Dead Weather CD (which I also love) I decided to give the Raconteurs a shot. I LOVE LOVE this album. I love the variety of songs, I love the lyrics, I love that its not White Stripes in anyway. It just shows the genius of these musicians to create so many different and distinct sounds. I am sorry I went so long without this album, and I am jumping on the bandwagon, a few years much too late!
Free Music Review: Child, then Woman, then Child Again Hit: 5 Stars
This album makes me feel like a kid just discovering rock-n-roll. Each song is well crafted. When I was sixteen and had my first car, Led Zeppelin II was in the deck on auto-reverse for months. Now the tunes are on an iPod, I'm old and wrinkled, but I don't feel it driving along and grooving to Jack White and company.
Heavy influences of Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, and other assorted guitar gods you'll be trying to remember as the next song grows on you.
Free Music Review: Bold New Vocals Hit: 5 Stars
What I really appreciate in this album, and in Consolers of the Lonely for that matter, is the contrasting vocal work between the power pop style of Benson and the Detroit Blues style of White. Seldom do you see a group these days with one good vocalist but this band has two. They made really good decisions with who should sing on which song also. I would compare it to Daltrey and Townshend except more evenly distributed.
Free Music Review: nice Hit: 5 Stars
As with everything else Jack White is involved with this is amazing. This band is full of energy, they are wonderful song writers and great musicians.
Free Music Review: Trying to become hip Hit: 4 Stars
So, about a year ago, I bought a Zune for when I work out, and quickly realized that the 15 gigs I downloaded off my CDs were all bands from the 70's or early 80's and the music they're still doing; a very little bit of rap, but nothing from the last 2 decades. So I had heard White Stripes on the radio, and bought Icky Stomp, and that led me to buying the rest of White Stripes cd's, most of which are great, So when I saw that Jack White is past of Raconteurs, I bought them and really like this album a lot.
The punchline is that I was shopping in Safeway, and they were playing White Stripes on the sound system there. So much for being hip! But, what the heck---I do like th music, and I enjoy it.
Square Old Man!
