Free Music Review: "So At Last, A Harry Warren Songbook Has Come Along, And It's A Wondrous Thing, An Affair To Remember"
Hit: 5 Stars

"Warren's melodies hold a fascination for jazz musicians that's above and beyond the call of duty....So at last, a Harry Warren Songbook has come along, and it's a wondrous thing, an affair to remember. This heart of mine is gaily dancing now. And that's something to keep in mind, the next time the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie." ~ Will Friedwald ~

That's a sharp-witted quote from Will Friedwald who wrote on his Liner Notes that Harry Warren's hundredth anniversary in 1993 was not commemorated with "CD anthologies, TV specials, White House concerts, a postage stamp, gala concerts, star-studded PBS events, revivals or Broadway revue" like the accolade Cole Porter received on his centennial in 1991. But even if he didn't get the kind of centennial celebrations that were given to Cole Porter (1991), George Gershwin (1998), Duke Ellington (1999) or Johnny Mercer (2009), to me, Harry Warren was a brilliant composer in his own right who fairly deserved recognition for his works. His music has an incredible staying power - the kind that captures every music lover's ears and stays there forever, ageless music that was so enjoyable yesterday as it is today.

If Frank Sinatra had Bill Miller, Tony Bennett had Ralph Sharon. It's a common knowledge amongst fans of Tony Bennett that the great pianist has accompanied the living legend in almost all his recordings and live shows in the past. Ralph Sharon is one of the best pianists in the history of jazz and this album, "The Ralph Sharon Trio Plays Harry Warren," is a perfect example of his ingenuity as a jazz pianist and as arranger/composer as well.

The trio performs the most beautiful melodies from Warren's body of work. According to Mr. Sharon, he "wasn't shopping for an unsung composer when he hit upon an idea of a Warren anthology." He recalls, "I suddenly realized that there were so many of his songs that I had grown up with, and which I had been playing all my professional career. There are so many great songs of his that I played, and it gradually dawned on me that they were all by him, things like 'September in the Rain' and 'Jeepers Creepers.' I've always played those in bands and with the trio. So I thought, why not put them together and do an all Harry Warren album." And the rest is history.

For the record, Ralph Sharon is one of the few musicians who take the Great American Songbook by heart. He has recorded tribute albums in honor of the best composers in the history of American music such as Gershwin, Rodgers, Berlin, Porter, Loesser, Arlen, Cahn and Warren. In every tribute album he recorded, he never failed to write a melody for the honored composer. In this album, the pianist/composer/arranger wrote "Harry's Minor Lament" as his homage to Warren's greatness.

This is one of the most remarkable tributes of all-time. You'll love it in its entirety. You'll enjoy the music of Warren in trio settings. It is so simple yet very charming, listener-friendly and easy on the ears. The interplay between Douglas Richeson on bass, Clayton Cameron on drums and Mr. Sharon himself on piano is commendable. I especially loved Ralph Sharon's solo number in "You'll Never Know" and the trio's renditions of "The More I See You" and "An Affair To Remember," which are some of the most beautiful pieces of music from Harry Warren.

This is a perfect disc to play when you just want to sit back, relax and unwind. With my heartfelt recommendation!
