Free Music Notes for The Red Violin: Original Motion Picture SoundtrackFree Music Review: Brilliant Variations on a Subtle Soundtrack Hit: 5 Stars
As a long-standing Corigliano fan, I rushed to see "The Red Violin" the week it came out. I was rewarded with a moving and accessible score. Upon purchasing the CD and listening to it several times, the hidden subtleties of the thematic transformations emerged. Rarely does a soundtrack so meaningfully enhance the theme of a film: the search for the perfect union of passion and logic is inherent within the visual narrative as well as the musical progression. Perhaps the best aspect of the disk is Corigliano's variations on the film's themes in the "Chaconne for Violin and Orchestra." This work is vintage Corigliano, taking his ideas to their musical exhaustion by alternating poignant meditation with the pure passionate energy. If for nothing else, gut this CD for Joshua Bell's electrifying performance of this well-crafted work of art.
Free Music Review: Joshua Bell, Mr. Violin, you grew up! Hit: 5 Stars
I was privileged to see Joshua Bell, the lead violinist throughout this recording, perform when he was still quite young at the Cleveland Museum of Art in the early 1980s. He played beautifully then but looked as if he'd be happier doing some other teenaged type pursuit. Well,he has completely grown up, judging by this recording, and now I can't picture him doing anything but playing the violin in heaven as his eternal role. This album deservely won the oscar for best soundtrack and deserved it. The soundtrack's overall composer, who accepted the oscar on the stage, profoundly thanked Bell for playing like a God. You don't have to like classical music to like this recording. I have very few classical recordings in my CD collection but this is a brilliant exception to my rule.
Free Music Review: Haunting and beautiful - just like the film! Hit: 5 Stars
I'm probably slightly biased towards this music, because I was blown away by the film and the soundtrack evokes the emotion and passion I felt when watching the film. Even so, if you haven't seen this film, and if you like powerful, moving music, with lots of violin emotion, I recommend you try this soundtrack. Who knows ... you may rush out and also buy the film as a result!
Let me add that I am not a musical expert and can't give an in-depth review which dissects the composition of this music. However, like a beautiful painting, I appreciate art when it speaks to me; when it touches a chord inside me; when it makes me weep; when it fills me with joy. Red Violin does this for me - the film and the soundtrack.
Free Music Review: Music to create an emotional journey to span the ages. Hit: 5 Stars
As a professional violinist, I was eagerly awaiting the release of "The Red Violin" soundtrack. A local art/theater released the movie (it only ran one week), and they played the soundtrack as background music while the audience waited for the movie to start. The haunting and thrilling music created anticipation for the stories that were to unfold. Joshua Bell grasps the depth and variety of the individual players/characters, and makes the violin LIVE as it's own separate entity. I found that I appreciated the storyline of the movie more after enjoying the soundtrack. Any violin-enthusiast will sincerely enjoy the depth and passion of the music of "The Red Violin".
Free Music Review: Virtuosic Hit: 5 Stars
It's rather modern sounding. The final track is ridiculously long and, I feel, unnecessary, not to mention rather different in character from the rest of the score. But now I've made it sound like a sucky soundtrack--it isn't. It's a showcase of Joshua Bell through the ages. The storyline follows the life of a famous violin, and takes us though different periods of musical history. Therefore Bell gets the chance to render everything from a Classical concerto to a gypsie tune to the modern, beautifully spooky "Red Violin Theme". This CD is truly little more than an amazing violinist wowing us, but I really have no objects to that!
