Free Music Review: Time heals all wounds
Hit: 3 Stars

Like many men, I was introduced to the Roches by a female friend. And like most of the men I knew, I found it un-bear-a-ble. I don't mean to be crude, but our basic attitude was, "come on over and spend the night with you? sure, be there in a minute! what, the Roches are on? Actually, I've got to clean out the refrigerator." To this day, the cover still sends a minor shudder through my spine.

But now, as I am able to look back, I see that just as there were things I didn't appreciate in my lady friend, there were things I didn't appreciate in the Roches. The "thinness" of their voices, which I used to find maddening, now exerts a kind of compelling quality over me. I think what I didn't get then and what my lady friend did get was that there was something cool in being vulnerable.

In fact, at the time, I could not believe that this high-powered, up-and-coming female executive would listen to what I heard as music for overwrought but bland girls with long straight hair with just too little sense to develop an eating disorder like their hallmates. I mean, "college folk"--what could be more wrong in so many ways?

But the same cynicism that made me under-appreciate D. made me miss something about the Roches, and this is that they were 100% honest, which is why they didn't sound it. Because it takes a lot of production and glam in the pop music world to sound honest. But they didn't put on airs, and they didn't take themselves too seriously, and--most importantly--when their popularity began to fade REAL quick, they didn't panic and do whatever it took to stay in the limelight. And that's why they spoke to folks like D.--I think in a way they were relieved to scurry back into the hole of femme/christmas-pop. As they sang: "she's got to stay the size of a mouse"....

In some ways, I feel bad that we didn't give the Roches a more positive response at the time. I imagine that it really would have made them feel better if a lot of guys said, "you know, we really love what you're doing. we don't always get it, but we're there for you." Instead, we turned our backs, and we didn't really think about what that kind of rejection could mean.

They faded away, but they had each other. They had some hard times since and they were open about it without being self-indulgent. That kind of honesty is a platform for, let us admit it, a pretty lukewarm performance at any one time. But it can be the basis for a lifetime of sincerity, and I wish we all had that. At the same time, I sometimes think a little flange on the vocals wouldn't hurt, nor some syncopation on the drums.[13]

The Roches Poster

With a series of '80s albums for Warner Brothers, Maggie, Terri, and Suzzy Roche invented a tart fusion of barber shop, doowop, and vaguely Celtic singing styles. Their voices could rise and dart around each other with the instinct only sisters possess, and their original material is by turn strangely funny and darkly evasive. Produced by the surprising choice of experimental guitarist Robert Fripp, the debut is their freshest recording, and a good avenue for new listeners to enter their captivating vocal world. --Roy Francis Kasten
