Free Music Review: The Best Action Score From Horner Thus Far
Hit: 5 Stars

Horner's score for the comic film The Rocketeer is considered one of his best works and action scores. I cannot disagree on that. The uplifting, noble theme for the hero can send your mind soaring. In the beginning of the score after a slow flowing lyrical piano rendition of the theme, the theme played by the strings soars off with beauty and grace. It is my favorite heroic theme, next to Danny Elfman's Batman theme. The Flying Circus track definately sounds like something out of a comic, full of the ups and downs in of flying through the sky. The part where the hero breaks into action is truly a classic in action film history. Jenny's theme is beautiful and tries to copy the romanciful style John Williams used for Han and Leia's theme in The Empire Strikes Back, especially on Jenny's Rescue. The small motif for the sinister Neville Sinclaire played largely by the trumpets can be compared to the Nazi's motif on Raiders Of The Lost Ark but with a mid-1900's sound to it. Jenny's Rescue is truly a swashbuckling track, much like the second track, with a lighthearted touch to it and some romantic flare to it. Track 7 gets sinister and tense but track 9 really steals thet part, a dark confrontation with Neville and his goonies on top of a zeppelin, a great climatic piece with a explosive end. The End titles is much like a reshowing of the first track and ends with a fun and wild ending. I recommend this soundtrack for anyone who wants to hear a real action score or hear one of Horner's best scores.

Free Music Review: If your looking for one of the best James Horner scores...
Hit: 5 Stars

...the Rocketeer sure is one of them! When it comes to James Horner, his best scores are probably Willow, Glory, and The Rocketeer. It is sad that The Rocketeer isn't better known as a soundtrack to collectors, and it is often under rated. This soundtrack is a must for all soundtrack collectors, and should be respected as one of the better CDs out there. The main theme is a slow and gorgeous tune played with strings, before blending into a more swifter, flying music. The Flying Circus is my favrorite of the CD, beginning as a quick and tense song, yet giving you a clear picture of what's going on. Played primarily with brass, Horner takes this track from descending chords to the main theme played with strings then on to a really hillarious song, making you feel as if you are visiting the corn fields. The other big track of the CD, The Zeppelin, begins as brass and strings play up and down the scale, and continues on into a quite exciting song, always having a suprise around the corner. Although much of the music is on the tense side (yet then again, bot so tense) other tracks, such as Jenny's theme, is much like the Rocketeer's main title...Quiet, slow, and lots of strings. This soundtrack is a MUST for everyone! Anyone who appeals to anything such as Star Wars, Willow, Hook, or Cutthroat Island, this score is very similar. My choice? Give it a try whatever you do!

Free Music Review: Horner at one of his best
Hit: 5 Stars

I know Titanic got all the hype, and let me say that it is without question a great soundtrack, and Horner should be proud of himself, but this has got to be one of Horner's best, if not his best. Glory, and The Land Before Time (Seriously!) both are right up here as well, with Titanic and Deep Impact not too far behind. But before I had any of those, there was Rocketeer. What can I say? When I heard the main theme on another soundtrack sampler, I fell in love with it. Of all the various tracks and themes in the close to 50 soundtracks I have, this theme is right up there in the top 5, maybe top 3! Only the Jurassic Park and Rudy themes stir my spirits more. But this CD isn't just the main theme. The following tracks are great as well, and the love theme titled "Jenny" is very pretty and romantic. The exception to the great tracks is # 5, which is rather dull. Plus, #'s 4 and 8, the vocal cues sung by Melora Hardin, are fitting for the era, but rather detached from the rest of the CD. Those minor flaws however do not detract from the overall beauty and energy that this soundtrack has. I recomend it very highly to any Horner fan, and any soundtrack fan for that matter. Let it take to you back to a simpler time, and let YOUR hopes, dreams, and victories soar, as you listen to this score! :-)

Free Music Review: The Rocketeer SOARS!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

It's a shame that "The Rocketeer" stalled at the box-office becaue (I think) it's a terrific movie and one of Disney's best. But it had a bit too much swearing for a Disney movie (one "s.o.b") plus a scene where Neville Sinclair sensuously kisses Jenny. (Those two bits aren't really suitable for kids; the film should have remained a Touchstone Pictures' release). Having said that, on to the music.

The score isn't extensive, but it's really good, especially "Main Title/Takeoff." I also like "Jenny," "Begin The Begine," "When Your Lover Has Gone," "Jenny's Rescue," "Neville Sinclair's House," "Rondezvous At Griffith Observatory" "The Zeppelin" & "Rocketeer To The Rescue/End Title." I wish the music from the movie Neville was working on had been included in the movie, as it sounded a bit like the fight scene in "The Adventures Of Robin Hood" and it was good fun too. With the above reservations, Disney flies high yet again.

Free Music Review: Rockets to the top
Hit: 5 Stars

Here lies another fantastic James Horner score. This contains one of the best themes he has written all time. It starts out in "Main Title/Takeoff" as a piano solo and then takes off with the orchestra. It is upbeat and heroic, everything a superhero theme should be. The theme is found throughout the score in various cues, such as "Jenny's Rescue", "The Zeppelin", and the grand finale "Rocketeer to the Rescue/End Title". A secondary love theme can be found in "Jenny", as well as in "Neville Sinclair's House" and parts of "Jenny's Rescue". "The Flying Circus" is a spectacular action cue with plenty of snare drums and bursting brasses. The best parts of the score occur when the wonderful main theme is played. It really heightens the music and lets it soar. An overall wonderful score that really rockets its way to the top!
