The four albums following "Sticky Fingers" - I mean the three after "Exile on Mainstreet" - "Goats Head Soup," "It's Only Rock and Roll" and "Black and Blue" always have taken it on the chin from Stones critics . . . who don't know what they're talking about. In retrospect, if you're still playing Stones albums -- and you should be -- these three hold up among the best. The new Universal remasters are so fine it's scary. What a gorgeous job. I've got a $10,000 stereo, and, trust me, it's been dying to hear CDs that sound this good. Those of you on mp3 and music on the computer and iPod and all that, you do not know what you're missing. All others, give "Black and Blue" a revisit. The Stones are not emphasizing songs here, but the old line that this was the album they just tried out new guitarists after Mick Taylor split is lazy reviewing become accepted fact. The Stones are in superb, coiled form here. Yes, there are not a lot of songs, but the band was exploring jams at this point, tinged with Jamaican vibes, dance floor repetition and nuance in the shifting layers of sound and rhythm. "Hot Stuff," "Hey Negrita" -- both are brilliant. The two ballads are classics. Crazy Mama, particularly in the remaster, is an overwhelmingly joyful rocker from the Faces school. "Melody" is a great lost Stones song, and the semi-duds ("Hand of Fate," which some love, and "Cherry Oh Baby") certainly are not embarrassing. I, frankly, love this album, what? Thirty some years on. Buy it, get your Ya Ya's out, and turn it loud.
