Free Music Notes for Forty Licks AlbumFree Music Review: The Blueprint For Rock'N'Roll Hit: 4 StarsThe Stones simply wrote the book when it comes to modern rock music, & these are forty reasons why. After starting off in the mid-Sixties as "just another" suit & tie British Invasion group with songs like "The Last Time", "Have You Seen Your Mother Baby?" & "It's All Over Now" (complete with their jangly guitars), they exploded in 1968 with "Street Fighting Man", "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and the startling (at the time) "Sympathy For the Devil", morphing into the bad boys of rock that we've come to know & love. To think that this transformation came in the span of a mere two or three years is unbelievable, but they set themselves apart from the rest of the pack & never looked back. (One criticism is that these songs aren't arranged in chronological order. It would have been interesting to hear how their sound evolved. As it is, the arrangement of tracks seems haphazard.) In the Seventies, after weathering the loss of Brian Jones & Mick Taylor, the Stones rolled on with Ron Wood without missing a beat. They also withstood the fads of disco & punk, even incorporating them into classics of their own in "Miss You" & "Shattered". I would have liked to see four more classics included rather than four brand new tracks (an all too familiar marketing ploy aimed at those who have all the classics). Inevitably, certain fan favorites will be missing, however, as near as I can tell, nothing absolutely essential has been omitted.
