Free Music Notes for Goats Head Soup Album

Free Music Review: Superbly sophisitcated, soulful, and spiritual.
Hit: 5 Stars

If you choose _Sticky Fingers_, as many Stones fans (such as myself) might, as the yardstick by which to measure other Stones albums, then I say _Goat's Head Soup_ measures up extremely well. I can't understand why some Stones fans don't think so. There really aren't any bad songs. The production values (such as sound quality) are superb. The musicianship is equally professional. The music and words are all by that tallented team of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. You can hear some of the best trends of the time (1973) at work here in terms of instrumentation, arrangement, effects and tones, and melodic style. The whole funk thing was really developing, and the road to disco was being paved, but there is no actual disco music on this album, just some of it's funk sensibilities. Even the front, back, and inside album cover design is of the slickest artistic quality. Several wonderful keyboard artists and horn players appear on this album, and the results are breath-taking. Billy Preston's clavinet performance on "(Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo) Heartbreaker" is nothing less than totally awesome, and is complemeted by very funky rhythm guitar. Put these together with the passionate lyrics and lead vocal, the intense harmony vocals, and the brilliant and powerful horns and drums (Charlie Watts had already by this time evolved into a really great drummer), and "Hearbreaker" is one of the most exiting rock-&-roll opuses on record. Nicky Hopkins played much wonderful piano on many great songs on several Stones albums, and his performance on "Angie" is particularly memorable here. The accoustic guitars on "Angie" are absolutely beautiful, too. Being a very guitar-oriented band, the Stones were going through one of their best periods (1969 to 1974) when Mick Taylor was with them; he and Keith worked very well together by blending their styles and supporting eachother's lead guitar playing with solid, reliable rhythm guitar. "Coming Down Again" is noteworthy not only for Keith's nice lead vocal (before whiskey and tobacco completely took a toll on his voice), but also for the very personal lyrics which may describe his wooing Anitia Pallenberg away from the late former Stone, Brian Jones. I don't know about everybody else, but my experience has shown me that while some songs and albums are loved immediately, some need time to grow on you; some of my favorite music is stuff that originally didn't do anything for me. Maybe Stones fans that don't like this album need to listen to it again; it might be worth their while. It's actually quite beautiful, musical, soulful, and spiritual, as a Stones album ought to be. The song "100 Years Ago" is a perfect example of what I'm talking about.
