Free Music Review: At their peak!

Love You Live is the Rolling Stones live, and unvarnished. The El Mocambo set is very much their reggae peak, while their Paris, France performance is electric (Disc one, not disc two as described), kicks off this slice of heaven, warts and all. I was there in Exhibition Stadium, Toronto a night after their reggae performance in the El Mocambo, and the atmosphere prior to the show was one of doubt, and some unease, from those 45,000 that hadn't been at the El Mocambo. Then, they came out and fired away as only they could. If that miserable slab of concrete and steel had a roof, the Stones would have blown it clean off. They told the world that night that they were not going away and they were ready to party and play the music, never mind all the **** being thrown at them. Yes, this is not "perfect", but if you were there or only wish you were in Paris in 1977, or Toronto a few months later it is as you may, or may not ;-) recall it all. Their Montreal stop on this tour was another memorable one, when they took the stade Olimpique (sic) by storm. When they ended the fun at 4AM (?) we roared well into the morning rush hour!

Digitally remastered reissue of The Rolling Stones 1977 live album.1977's Love You Live lands near the top of the list of the Stones' half-dozen live albums; especially for the brief set of Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, and Howlin' Wolf stuff recorded at Toronto's El Mocambo (while Keith Richards was waiting out the legal hassles of a heroin bust five days earlier). Billy Preston is the real star of this show though, and his great piano, organ, and soul shouting are all over this record, especially on the opening soul revue of "Honky Tonk Women," "If You Can't Rock Me," and "Get Off of My Cloud." Keith outpunks the punks on "Happy" and Mick is all Mick--Mr. Pouting and Posing--on the notorious "Star Star." --Michael Ruby
