...
I consider myself very knowledgeable on the history of this band, and can pretty much tell what albums these were left off just by the production or little nuances such as instruments featured. This disc, in particular I have listened to many times, so I'm not casual in my assesment of it.
This collection of outtakes and such was from within the first 8 years of the Stones as a recording band. Without question this was their most prolific period, and given the Stones incredible penchant for writing, their musical prowess as innovators and taking chances with stylistic experiments; basically the Stones with the Beatles and Bob Dylan drove the ship of popular music in the 60's like no others. Considering the output of the Stones, there were bound to be tracks that would not make it onto their lp's. Considering the number of discs they put out by 1970, and the quality of their output, most of the songs on Metamorphosis are of superb quality. One thing you can't critiscize the Stones for was their inspired pursuit of a variety of records representing different genres. Some of the songs on this are downright pop (Out of Time, Each and Every Day of the Year and I'd Much Rather Be with the Boys), country or country blues (Somethings Just Stick in your Mind, Heart of Stone), and the bluesy, soulful sound that no white rock group could do quite like them (Jiving Sister Fanny, Try a Little Harder and I'm Going Down). Then there are two cuts I particularly like here that have the Stones stamp all over them....those kind of dark, yet catchy numbers the defy description like Family and Memo from Turner. I've loved this record since it came out back in '75, and thanks to Andrew Loog Oldham for releasing it in the first place, even if it was to make a little money fer 'imself.
While I think this might be more of a record for serious fans of the Stones, especially of the years Brian Jones was still around, this album would have stood on its own as a studio release from the 60's. If you get it, I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Metamorphosis Poster

Culled from the Rolling Stones' massive archive, 1975's METAMORPHOSIS is the band's sole rarities compilation featuring material from the Stones' fertile '60s and '70s era. Cherry picked by former manager Allen Klein as a result of a bitter lawsuit that found a similar anthology contrived by Bill Wyman going unreleased, this treasure trove of cuts is a boon to both die-hard and casual Stones fans. It kicks off with a lush, orchestrated version of "Out Of Time," one of a handful of outtakes (along with "Heart Of Stone") featuring a studio full of session musicians including John McLaughlin, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones.

Overseen by Mick Jagger and then manager Andrew Oldham, these tracks provide interesting insight to a time when the Stones' success allowed them to dish off songs to other UK artists, using versions like these as demos. Other highlights include a killer cover of Stevie Wonder's "I Don't Know Why" (originally recorded for LET IT BLEED) and "Memo From Turner," a Jagger/Richards number cut with Al Kooper and penned for the soundtrack to the Jagger vehicle Performance. Making its CD debut in 2002, METAMORPHOSIS remains a jewel that still glimmers almost three decades after its release.
