Free Music Notes for Shine a Light: Original SoundtrackFree Music Review: The Kind of Show Stones Fans Dream About Hit: 5 StarsWhat other band on the planet could do what the Stones do with Muddy Waters' Champagne & Reefer? This is one of the hottest blues rocks this band has covered in a long time.
Plus the best Stones albums (Beggars Banquet, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile, Some Girls, & Tattoo You) are well represented. This is the kind of set you want to hear.
Must listens/Favorites: Lovin' Cup, Champagne & Reefer, Faraway Eyes, Just My Imagination, Tumbling Dice, Live With Me (ok Aguilera overdoes it but I think we would be disappointed if she didn't). And Keith's You Got the Silver, Connection and Little T & A.
The critics have been pronouncing this band dead since the early 70's; but these same critics have, on occasion, been silenced by a stunning performance on an inspired night. This is one of those nights and one of those performances.
Mick's southern twang on Faraway Eyes and Keith's soulful strumming on Just My Imagination are enough to make even a music critic smile.
Free Music Review: Oh dear ... Hit: 1 StarsThe best band in the world between 1963 and 1967, and NOTHING worth hearing in 41 years since.
It can only be vanity that drives them, as they surely don't need the money. This is garbage, but the sheep still line up to be fleeced.
Free Music Review: It IS WORTH IT!!! Hit: 5 StarsYes, The Stones have about 15 live albums and some of them are just ok...many with not a whole lot of UMMPH/personality/MAGIC/whatever...but us STONES freaks always buy'em/try 'em...This one IS head and shoulders above most and worth it-I wouldn't normally write a revue of the Stones, but felt stronly enough about the album to share...so what are ya waiting for?!!!
Free Music Review: Still Rolling After 46 Years! Hit: 5 StarsAs a hardcore Stones fan, nothing delights me more than another movie and live album. SHINE A LIGHT is great stuff, containing excellent versions of big hits ("Sympathy for the Devil") and less familiar green grass ("She Was Hot," which has rarely been done live). My favorite moments are Keef's two tunes, "You Got the Silver" and "Connection," and a truly resonant take on "As Tears Go By." I am also taken by the guests: Jack White on "Loving Cup," Buddy Guy on "Champagne and Reefer," and especially Christina Aguilara on "Live With Me." I'm not really a fan of the Spears generation of girl singers, but CA does herself proud on this track. Be sure to pick up the deluxe version, as you get the whole show and some neat bonus tracks. Rock on, Stones!
Free Music Review: Oh, What a beautiful BUUUUUZZZZZZZZ!!! Hit: 5 StarsThe Rolling Stones have released many live recordings throughout the years and none of them have ever been 'bad' but the problem has been that, other than YA YA'S, they haven't been 'great'. They range from being merely 'good' to 'very good' and never quite live up to the reality of actually being there. The large stadium atmosphere just never translated to CD very well. Before you say "OH NO, NOT ANOTHER LIVE ALBUM FROM THE STONES", it is important to note that 'Shine a Light' really seems to benefit from playing the smaller venue at the Beacon in NYC. The performances are tighter as the band was able to concentrate more on the construction of the songs as opposed to playing the crowd in those (too) large venues. It almost feels as if the band went back and listened to what originally made these songs so good to begin with and took it from there. This is definitely their best live recording, next to YA YA'S!!
Charlie is exceptionally solid as are the interwoven guitars of Woody and Keith. No, Jagger isn't going to be nailing every note like when he was 25 but the entire band sounds as confident as ever. The old fire has been replaced by a certain maturity as these guys continue to bring rock and roll to places it has never seen. Like Keith Richards said in an interview, "It's not our job to compete on top 40 radio. We've been there and done that and taught them how to do it. Our job is to see where we can take this thing so if those other bands behind us are lucky enough to get this far, they will know where to go." Yes, the Stones get ragged on too often about their age but let's remember, they won't always be here so, for me, I'm glad they are still around.
Keep on paving the way!!
