Free Music Review: You have to know where you've been to know where you are going Hit: 4 StarsThe "Organix" album is probably one of the best lead off albums a group can make. That album helps prepare the Roots fanbase for some of the best rhymes Black Thought and Malik B could deliver, and some of the best music a band could put together for a rap album. A very good investment and a very good album to add to the collection.
Free Music Review: Forgotten Classic Hit: 5 StarsAs Stuart Scott would say:
"As cool as the other side of the pillow."
Experience The Roots at their very best.
Free Music Review: Nothing Tops Organic Hip Hop Jazz Hit: 5 Starsok, this and the roots second album (Do you want more?!!!??!) and their fourth album (Things fall apart) are the best hip hop i have ever heard!!!! i'm used to hearing egotistical rap "artists" and lyrics such as i'm a pimp BLAH BLAH BLAH. drop your hip hop notions and stereotypes and do your self a favor and listen to the roots!!!! just by listening to organix from beginning to end will be a fulfilling musical experience not achieved anywhere else and in the roots smoote soulful and jazzy and HUMBLE style. the album opens up with the short but powerful song (the roots is comin') in this song you hear black thought's unparalled writing, ?uestlove's dynamic drumming. listen to the intriquite high hat!! the first full length song is pass the popcorn. here is where you hear the jazzy keys. and incredible upright!!!! my favorites from this album are "anti-circle" "grits" "i'm out deah" "essaywhuman?!!!??!" "There's A Riot Going On" hahaha "common dust" "the session" and "syreeta's Having My Baby" There's a lot of fine hip hop but the roots are legendary, no pun intended hahaha
Free Music Review: Does Anybody Like Real Music? Sweet Music? Soul Music? (Rating: 8 out of 10- -4 stars) Hit: 4 StarsIt took me a while, but I finally got a hold of this album. If you didn't already know, this is their '93 demo "Organix". If you've heard most of their albums, then chances are you will like this. In fact, a lot of this sounds like their second album Do You Want More?!!!??! sound wise. A lot of the tracks have heavy bass lines and swinging keyboard sounds, that at some points you think they were performing live (or atleast thats how I saw it). I guess since the fact that the origonal cut of "Essawhamah?" was recorded live at the Soul Shack, it does justify the live sounding vibe on this album.
Some more tracks that stood out were "Good Music" because of the production played so well as well as the hook that Black Thought says (the title to my review is the beginning of the hook). Both versions of "Pass The Popcorn" are excellent although I perfer the revisited version over the origonal in my opinion. And then we have "The Session", a track that clocks in almost thirteen minutes and has everybody spitting a rhyme, even ?uestlove (infact he rhymes a lot on this album). The production on that song sounds like it could be used in a movie, or such. There is a few spoken word poems on here as well, so many will enjoy those as well.
This demo is great from The Roots. It showcases what they were before they blew up, and became popular, as well as give a great introduction to their later albums ("Illadelph Halflife" remains my favorite album). Any fan of this band should have this album. It's really not that hard to find. This is one of those albums you shouldn't pay no more than 25 dollars for. But the album itself will make an excellent addition to your hip hop collection.
