Free Music Notes for The Royal Tenenbaums (Collector's Edition) Album

Free Music Review: Entertaining, but seems stripped.
Hit: 3 Stars

The other reviewers mentioned the lack of the Stones and Simon And Garfunkel on this CD, and I agree...the omission of these songs takes away somewhat from letting the CD give you the feel of the movie. Another missing song is the orchestral version of the Beatles song in the beginning of the film (was it "Let It Be"? I don't remember...)

Another problem I have with the record is the sequencing and editing. First the sequencing...the soundtrack on this and other Anderson films is made up mostly of pop tunes. Yet right away after the first Nico song, it is orchestral for quite a while before we get back into pop (though "Lindergh Palace Hotel Suite" has some nice jazz flourishes). That's 6 minutes of the Ysaye Quartet, followed by 7 minutes of Mothersbaugh (itself followed by the instrumental Dylan track). Not that any of these tracks are bad, but to place them right in a row at the beginning of the record sets a bad tone for what is to come.

I also have a problem with how some tracks are hastily cut off in the end--even when they would be finished anyway. I can understand how some of the Motherbaugh pieces could be faded out in the end--they are simply incidental music and maybe have no proper endings, but on some tracks (The Ramones and Christmas Time Is Here particularly) the songs are finished, and would end naturally, yet whoever edited the record decided to fade them to nothing in the end instead of just letting them finish. I don't know if this bothers anyone else (or if I'm wrong and the original recordings were like this)...but I get an incomplete sort of feeling when I don't hear the Ramones finish holding that last noisy note, or when I don't hear the Vince Guaraldi Trio finish that last note. This happens a few other times on the record, and it just doesn't sit well with me.

Anyway...enough complaining...the songs on the record are great (though I still hate The Clash), the originial music by Mark Mothersbaugh is incredible. Very inventive.

If you are a big fan of the film and enjoy soundtracks, I'd say it's worth buying, but I just wish they would've tried a little harder.
