Free Music Notes for ArchaeologyFree Music Review: Niel Innes at his best Hit: 5 Stars
This Rutles compilation took me by surprise. I listen to "All you need is Cash" often, so when I first heard this I though "Oh!..No up to par" but like all good music, it takes a few listens to catch you...and caught me it did.Neil Innes's writting style not only captures the Beatle essence but also takes on the Beatle humour and moves it up one notch. From Barry commenting that he doesn't need anybodys help on Randezvous, and being told, "Oh yeah, what about the middle eight" to Nasty shouting "I've got bleeding cramp in me sodding pinky" at the end of another track. It's fun, the music is fresh, and hey, it even sounds like their using the original Beatle instruments. A well polished production...get it!
Free Music Review: Excellent, brilliant & funny pop album. Hit: 5 Stars
Unlike the first Rutles album, which was seriously based on old Beatles tunes, "Archeology" can stand on its own as a brilliant piece of original work by the wonderful Neil Innes formerly of the Bonzo Dog Do-Dah Band. This album does have Beatles/Lennon influences but I think in a more serious way (which is good). I also loved the fact that Eric Idle didn't particiapate, leaving just the 3 other Rutles to do their album, much like the missing John Lennon from the Newest Beatles releases relating to the Beatles Anthology. The album is simply a "must" for any Beatles or Bonzo Dog Band fan, or most music fans. I wish there was more of this kind of music on the radio and in people's homes. Thanks Neil Innes! (et al.)
Free Music Review: MORE RUTLES, PLEASE (but only the music) Hit: 5 Stars
In another review, I summarily dismissed the RUTLES 2 DVD because, well, it sucked. The CD output, however, is always brilliant. This is probably due to the genius of Neil Innes, and he needs to keep the Rutles flame burning bright. Somehow, Innes manages to channel the best intentions and the best chops of the Beatles, as well as injecting a goodly amount of humor into every verse. I shant go through the songs one by one (others have done well by that method already...keep reading the reviews), but I think I should say that this is more than a parody. I challenge any listerner NOT to be singing along by the second spin of this disc. More Rutles, Neil...please. I'd settle for one CD every 5 years. But tell Eric to keep his HANDS OFF!
Free Music Review: I don't like anchovies - on top of strawberries Hit: 5 Stars
Way under rated Neil Innes, he of genius Bonzo Dog Band, parodies way over rated mop heads with better music and for sure funnier lyrics:
I don't like anchovies
on top of strawberries
and cream
Great pop music.
Some day people might wake up and realize how great the Bonzo's were. Razor sharp satire, cogent social commentary and guys who could play rings around most bands, especially when it comes to wailing on tubas and spoons. But watch out, the gorilla might throw a REAL bomb into the audience. Once they blew up the stage. Too bad for the Who.
5 stars because Neil has earned it. More than once.
Free Music Review: Who needs "the Threetles" when you got the Rutles. Hit: 5 Stars
This follow up to the 1978 album sounds more mature, more like a real album. Sure it sounds like the Beatles, but songs like "Questionaire", "The knicker elastic king", "Eine kleine middle klasse music" and "Joe public" are great songs in their own right. My personal favourite is "Joe public" (inspired by "Tommorow never knows"). It's much better than any song by the Britpop bands I know. I do hope Neil Innes will write and record more Rutle tunes, it sounds more like the Beatles than the "Threetles" themselves.
