Free Music Notes for ArchaeologyFree Music Review: Wonderful Hit: 5 Stars
This is a hilarious album as a Beatles take-off album. It's Rutlemania all over again. But after listening to it a number of times, I had to admit to myself that it's actually a great pop album as it is. We have Beatles rip-off groups like Oasis being taken seriously by the public and critics (and even more seriously by Oasis themselves!), doing sub-par Beatles-like sounds. And here you have the Rutles doing Beatles sounds as a JOKE, and they end up out-doing Oasis at their own game. I'm telling you, this album blows away anything Oasis has ever done! It's a great album. Good fun, too.
Free Music Review: A Wonderful Surprise Hit: 5 Stars
Having listened to both 'SpinalTap' CD's, I was afraid that this would be some of the same thing - funny lyrics but bad music. I was pleasently surprised. While, indeed, the lyrics are often funny ('We've arrived! And to prove it we're here...'), the REAL surprise is that the music is GOOD! It even has a 'bad' song, you know, one of those songs that just don't quite fit, (Easy Listening) which is very reminscent of some of those Ringo songs from that other band. I have already recommended it to most of my friends.
Free Music Review: Start afresh Hit: 5 Stars
Forget the parody, forget the tribute aspect: It's perfectly possible to take this album without any reference to its inspiration and enjoy it anway. Innes, who worked with the Beatles, and the band actually seem to be enjoying themselves; and there is plenty of that feeling for the listener to share. Don't think of it as a comedy album, because that really doesn't do justice to Innes' perfectly crafted slices of pop. Listen to "Archaeology" a few times and you might find it hard to go back to the originals.
Free Music Review: Brilliant Hit: 5 Stars
This is a wonderful continuation of the Rutles circa 1990's. The music is hilarious in its lyrical take-off of the Beatles lyrics, but more amazing is that the music is actually great, and sounds amazingly, brilliantly, like the Beatles! It's really wonderful music in and of itself. All these bands like Oasis, etc. try and sound like the Beatles seriously, and the Rutles try to sound like the Beatles as a joke, but the Rutles succeed where the Oasis type bands fail. Archaeology is an amazingly wonderful album!
Free Music Review: The Rutles - Archaeology Hit: 5 Stars
This second album by the Rutles is more like a real Neil Innes album with some Rutles touches. It has some more serious, mature songs on it, and even has some of the last recordings of Ollie Halsall, a guitarist and singer whom Neil had known since the early 1970's. Ollie sang the Paul McCartney songs. Some of the songs were recorded before his death in 1992 of a drug overdose, so Neil didn't have to sing them since he usually sang the John Lennon (Ron Nasty) songs.
