There's something strange and ironic in the fact that the hugely talented Neil Innes has written some of his finest music for this ongoing Beatles parody project. What makes THE RUTLES so special, it seems to me, is that despite the fact that specific Beatles songs were used as parody models for the entire history of this undertaking, Neil Innes' innate creativity has made these songs intensely effective, hooky and successful on their own terms. As pretty much the majority of all songwriters and composers are influenced by other songs and music anyway, the fact that these songs are overt homages to specific source material is hardly reason to dismiss their undeniable quality as examples of songwriting and producing craft.
Kudos all around to everyone involved, but a special thanks goes to Neil Innes. If you are a Rutles fan and haven't heard some of Neil's own early solo stuff, you are missing out on something special. The guy is still around, still witty and unique. Hats off to Neil, and to this enjoyable collection of elaborately produced songs, seemingly as much a labor of love and respect for the Beatles as any kind of satire.
Free Music Review: "The Beatles they aint!", (and that's a good thing). Hit: 4 Stars
Because The Beatles didn't stick to just one "sound", or one "style", it becomes necessry for a parody band such as The Rutles to work in the various styles in order to be a completly successful parody band. Why? After the screaming hysteria of the teenage-girls has passed, the music itself is what is remembered. Some people prefer one sound over the other instead of just loving it because it's The Beatles---SCREEEEAM. Therefore a parody band that limited its work, or even a particular album, to one sound would loose some part of the target audience. This CD effectivly touches many aspects of The Beatles sound. No matter what you like about The Beatles, or The Rutles, there are at least a couple of songs here you will LOVE (Track programming/repeat must be divinly inspired) and several more you will like alot. A definate must-have!
Free Music Review: Yes, no, don't know, I don't care Hit: 4 Stars
The Rutles were conceived and created by Eric Idle for a television special that parodied the Beatles. The music was written by Neil Innes, in a perfect Beatles pastiche style. This second Rutles album was released in response to The Beatles Anthology ]] CDs. This time around, the Rutles don't do as many parodies of specific Beatles songs. Some songs are identifiably similar to particular Beatles songs, but most of them are just songs performed in a Beatlesque style. I don't like the album as much as the first Rutles album, but it's still a very good album. Some of the songs are quite amusing, actually. Good show, lads!
Free Music Review: Twist & Rut Hit: 3 Stars
Less like the funny satire Rutles soundtrack and more like a Grammy nomination for best contemporary or laid back album; one of the tracks is "Eine Kleine Middle Klass Musik" which explains a lot in that this album is not as biting as the excellent soundtrack.
