Free Music Notes for The Secret Garden: Original Motion Picture SoundtrackFree Music Review: Gorgeous music! Hit: 5 Stars
Zbiniew Preisner's music score to the classic 1993 version of The Secret Garden has masterpiece written all over it! In every note! This music is absolutely delightful, slow but very, very uplifting and pleasant to listen to. The only problem with this soundtrack was the lack of the song "Winter Light" by Linda Ronstadt featured in the closing credits of the film which practically inspired more than half of the melodies heard in this still-amazing soundtrack. I have "Winter Light" on my computer, so I'm all good and will not take any stars away for that.
Some of the tracks are really short which is really a shame some times because they're lovely and you'd wish they would play longer. Other tracks are much longer and a little better. The recording is sharp and plain fantastic, while the vocal chorus performance is top-notch. My favorite tracks include "Walking Through The Garden", "Mary and the Robin Together", "Colin Opens His Eyes", "Colin Senses Craven", "Happily Ever After" and the greatest of them all, "Awakening of Spring."
Two other highly recommended soundtracks are "A Little Princess" for the 1995 classic film and "Alice in Wonderland" for the 1999 TV masterpiece.
Free Music Review: This soundtrack is complete, both musically and emotionally. Hit: 5 Stars
Nothing about this sountrack is embellished or grandiose; rather, it is an amazingly well composed peice of music. The compositions don't leave my ear wanting more or less, nor do they trivialize a story that most would consider to be a "childhood classic". (In other words, the compositions don't sound stereo-typically childish or "Disney-esque".) Most importantly, there is something about the compositions themselves that are joyful and extraordinarily tender all at once, and I don't think I have ever listened to a sountrack that has evoked within me such strong emotional reactions toward the film itself. I suppose what I am really trying to say is that the music and the movie cannot be seperated -- I experience the movie as I listen to the music. And yes, while I think that sountracks in theory are supposed to accomplish this task, I feel that this particular soundtrack captures the heart of Mary and Colin; of children and childhood. It is because of this that I can say that this music is complete, both emotionally and musically. This sountrack doesn't "point" toward the feelings or images of the film; it just simply IS The Secret Garden.
Free Music Review: It Is Linda Who Sings Winter Light In The Secret Garden! Hit: 5 Stars
The Secret Garden (1993) is a beautiful movie filled with beautiful music which is in this wonderful soundtrack and the only negetive is that they didn't include the beautiful song Winter Light. I know that there is a debate along reviewers on who sang Winter Light in the movie with a couple of reviewers insisting it was Sarah Brightman, but it wasn't Sarah Brightman. Sarah Brightman is a wonderful singer with a beautiful voice and she has a recording of Winter Light on one of her albums and I think that is where the confusion stems from. The version in the movie is actually sung by Linda Ronstadt who also has a beautiful voice and if you put in your DVD or video of the movie you will see that in the end credits it says Winter Light is written and performed by Linda Ronstadt and I just bought her CD The Very Best of Linda Ronstadt and the song Winter Light is on it. If you are looking for Sarah Brightman's rerecording of Linda's song it is on her Classics album.
Free Music Review: There's not much I can add... Hit: 5 Stars
that the other reviewers haven't said, but I had to stick my oar in. I first saw this movie when I was 10 and have been in love with it ever since. The soundtrack was one of the things that really stuck in my mind. It was like mermaid music. Even at 10 I could appreciate the beauty and sonerous melodies. Everytime I hear it, chills tickle my spine and I get this twinge because I regret that I'm not in the garden with Mary, Colin and Dickon. The soundtrack incorporates a lot of violin solos and a lot of classical sounding music. I think there is really a bit of a Celtic flavoring in it too. Not that much, just a hint, kind of like a lemon slice in a glass of water. It really complements the movie through all its moods, you could even say it fits the book. There's not really anyway to sum it up except that this is enchanting, and soothing and it's just real GARDEN music. Buy it, you will be inspired.
Free Music Review: Excellent Soundtrack Hit: 5 Stars
It really is a wonder why this soundtrack didn't even get an Academy Award nomination. Zbigniew Preisner composed something so clear, so beautiful, and so emotional which immediately evokes images of a wonderful garden set in the English countryside. That the movie itself was never recognised, either, for its beautiful simplicity combined perfectly with its moving strings and choir, shows that movies and music such as this are not appreciated in a world obsessed with all things vulgar.
The reason that "Winter Light" was not included in the soundtrack is beyond me. The music in the song was, after all, not written by Linda Ronstadt (as some seem to think), but rather Zbigniew Preisner himself. Ronstadt simply sang it. The main theme he wrote for the movie was later incorporated into Winter Light.
In any case, it is a soundtrack I highly recommend.
