I have no idea why this album was not a commerical success. I think it is a near masterpiece that walks softly but carries a big stick. Billy has laid his heart on the line with profound lyrics and haunting melodies. This is an album that shows the results of a man's metamorphisis. Gone (but not forgotten) are the adolescent ways of the past that featured in-your-face sizzling guitar riffs to make a point. In exchange we get the subtle, quite nuances used by adults. Never underestimate the power of silence, it is golden, and can speak volumes. When listening to Adore we need to keep a few things in mind. First, the Smashing Pumpkins have emerged from the ashes of their former selves as new beings. The subjects of their song "Perfect" find themselves in a remarkably similar situation. Second, Billy is a lot smarter than the average person, he uses words that are not present in most peoples vocabularies; and ambiguous ideas. There are some fans that are sophisticated enough to get it. Billy, use whatever channels you think are appropriate to transmit your message. Do not feel obligated to "dumb-down" your ideas for those unwilling to attempt understanding it. Besides, being one-dimensional is bad for business, it is counterintutive to longevity.

The darkness is still there--evidenced in the techno throb of the single "Ava Adore"--but the Pumpkins also tinker with Lennonesque lullabyes ("Behold! The Night Mare"), midtempo electronica ("Appels and Oranjes"), and tender calliope music ("Once Upon a Time"). Smartly, Corgan rarely upstages the watery sounds going on behind him; the trademark midsong blowouts are almost completely absent. Adore will strike your ears and heart in a way you didn't think the Smashing Pumpkins could. --Jason Josephes
