The Queen Is Dead is not only the masterpiece of Morrissey/Marr, but the standard of excellence of 80's music. From the memorable opening of "Take me back to dear old Blighty mixed in with Marr's guitar riff and Joyces forceful opening drum roll, we are taken back in time to Dickens England and before. Vicars in tutus, bigmouths who strike again and boys with love thorns in their sides,(for each other), add to the growels and frustrations of His very Highness Morrissey. Hi there Morrissey!! But the best is saved for last, as Morrissey declares, "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out". Wanting to escape "home", Morrissey finds out,"..it's not my home, its their home and I'm welcome no more". Growing up, self identity, sex and cars and cemetary gates OH MY, are all fair game on The Queen is Dead. Yes, some groups are bigger than others and The Smiths, no matter who wants to forget them, are bigger now than ever. Thank you Johnny Marr and yes, you too Morrissey for my favorite Smiths record and a top 10 record of all time. Newly re-mastered audio by Frank Arkwright (overseen by Johnny Marr, no less) and packaged in the original sleeves with original labels and original inner bags, pressed on high-quality 180 gram vinyl! This absolutely classic album from the Manchester quartet was originally released in 1986. Though the band only lasted four years as a recording unit, their influence can still be seen, heard and felt more than two decades after they officially split up. Rhino.This is the value of working at cross-purposes: The Smiths were Morrissey's excuse to undulate his wry, disaffected lyrics, and Johnny Marr's vehicle for his sharp, chiming, pop songs. Their favorite kind of compromise made them essentially a singles band, and The Queen Is Dead has a couple of their best (notably "The Boy with the Thorn in His Side," one of the greatest pop expressions of the Love That Dare Not Speak Its Name). But it also has some wonderful compromises of different kinds: the bizarrely romantic "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out," and "Cemetry Gates," where Marr covers up for Morrissey's floridity with shimmying rockabilly. --Douglas Wolk
