Free Music Review: Another reminder that a box set is overdue
Hit: 3 Stars

Is this the best 2-disc Smiths compilation available? Yes, but the fact that REEL AROUND THE FOUNTAIN is not included is reason enough to avoid purchasing this package. The 2-disc THE BEST OF THE SMITHS has been much-maligned - and rightfully so - but at least it contains this essential song, not to mention one or two others missing from this collection.

A box set for this seminal band is long overdue. Rhino or Sire ought to look at the terrific example set by Polydor when they put together the PEEL SLOWLY AND SEE box for the Velvet Underground, a group that has a similarly sized discography to The Smiths. That package successfully presented the original albums alongside demos and unreleased tracks. The Smiths are equally deserving of such a comprehensive set and until they receive such, I'll hang on to THE BEST OF THE SMITHS, warts and all.

Free Music Review: Doubleplusungood
Hit: 3 Stars

The problem with this collection, aside from the hideous cover, is that the songs are taken out of context. It plays like a mediocre mix tape. I like listening to albums by The Smiths, not random singles on shuffle play. A boxed set would be nice as would a concise collection of B-sides and rarities. If you haven't bought this yet, skip it. It's neither for the curious nor the hardcore fan.

Free Music Review: Reissue, repackage, repackage!
Hit: 3 Stars

Same songs, different cover.

Where's my extra track and my tacky badge?

Free Music Review: Like an embarrassing uncle turning up at a family function
Hit: 1 Stars

This album is an embarrassing anachronism - a tribute to pretentious luddite music of the 1980s. Occasionally hearing the odd song or two from The Smiths on radio once in a while is fine, but who would buy an entire album of this junk?
Here's the deal: the song titles are amusing and amongst the best ever written, the actual lyrics are so-so and range from maudlin to bleedin' obvious. The music is stock-standard unremarkable guitar-based Pop/Rock.

Overall, an album to play when guests stay too long or if one can't bring one's self to admit that one would really prefer listening to Karen Carpenter, but one still harbours the risible pretence that one is "cool".

Free Music Review: Hot Mastered Rubbish
Hit: 1 Stars

Rhino is usually VERY careful with sound, which is why it's so disappointing to discover that this release is hot mastered, just like everything else these days. Open any of the tracks in an audio editor and you'll see what I mean. Heck, "The Headmaster Ritual" is as loud and clipped as anything off the new Smashing Pumpkins album!

Truly a disappointment. Rhino, you should've known better.
