Free Music Notes for The Sound of Music (1965 Film Soundtrack - 40th Anniversary Special Edition)

Free Music Review: 40th Anniversary release - far superior to previous editions
Hit: 5 Stars

It doesn't happen very often, but occasionally -- perhaps once every 10 or 20 years -- a great and memorable soundtrack to a great and memorable film comes out. And fans and enthusiasts are left scratching their heads and pondering which is better: the soundtrack or the film. THE SOUND OF MUSIC is an example of this.

I first heard it when I was about five years old (the film had been out for 25 years at that point). And in my childish mind, I thought it was all ours. I mean my family's. I couldn't believe it when I found out that other people knew about THE SOUND OF MUSIC too when they hadn't even been over to our house to hear the record. But anecdotes aside, along with the music of STAR WARS, THE WIZARD OF OZ, and MARY POPPINS, THE SOUND OF MUSIC became an integral part of my earliest childhood memories of music.

The music on the CD is never dull and never boring. Even the slow tunes like "Something Good" are as wide awake with passion as the boisterous "Sound of Music" or the delightful romp "The Lonely Goatherd".

A huge improvement on the 40th Anniversary Collector's Edition is that all the tracks are arranged in chronological order, as they occur in the film. On the 35th Anniversary CD, there are two discs. The first disc contains the original soundtrack, and the second disc contains the orchestra pieces. The 40th Anniversary release kills two birds with one stone by putting it all on the same disc and in chronological order.

For any soundtrack enthusiast, no soundtrack collection is complete without THE SOUND OF MUSIC (preferably this 40th Anniversary edition.

Free Music Review: This 40th Anniversary Edition Is One Of "My Favorite Things!"
Hit: 5 Stars

One night last week, I was channel surfing and I came across Julie Andrews singing "My Favorite Things" in the film The Sound of Music. Have you ever noticed that no matter how many times you've seen a certain film, there's just something about it that makes you watch it over and over again? Sometimes it's not even on purpose. I wouldn't have normally sought out The Sound of Music, but there it was, and I couldn't escape the same magic I first experienced when I was just a kid all those years ago. And the film is magic. How many times have we heard "My Favorite Things," "(How Do You Solve A Problem Like) Maria," "Do-Re-Mi," Edelweiss," "Sixteen Going On Seventeen," not to mention the title track and the epic opus "Climb Ev'ry Mountain.?" I never tire of them. Here we are 40 years later still celebrating one of the greatest movie musicals of all time. In the new 40th anniversary edition, we're not only treated to the original music, but the CD soundtrack is remastered exquisitely and filled with previously unreleased tracks and film version tracks that never appeared on the original soundtrack. For the Sound of Music aficionado, this deluxe package also contains never-before-released interviews with the film's director, Robert Wise, plus Richard Rodgers and actress Charmian Carr ("Liesl"). The CD packaging is also stunning with rare photos, memorabilia and newly written liner notes from The Rodgers & Hammerstein Foundation. As I said, the film is magic, but what would this film be without "the sound" of music?! I give this 40th anniversary soundtrack 16 stars...going on 17!

Free Music Review: FINALLY, the soundtrack sounds as it should
Hit: 5 Stars

I purchased the first CD release of this soundtrack and it was awful. Tape hiss was so bad, and echo was there from RCA using the album master instead of the original master tapes. Now, after hearing this version, RCA has obviously gone to great care to make this soundtrack sound brilliant and as good as I thought it should always sound. RCA's living stereo recordings were superb and that is exactly what we get here! They have eliminated all of the voice echo, the orchestra sounds full, and the master tapes for the soundtrack album are in better shape...sounding better than the tracks on the film (DVD) do.

You get the original soundtrack recording, plus many of the recordings from the 6-track magnetic music masters used for the film. The RCA soundtrack recording selections, in my opinion, survived better than the film masters. They are cleaner and brighter and the stereo is beautiful.

I strongly recommend this edition (40th anniversary) to anyone who loves this soundtrack regardless of if they own a previous edition, none of them live up to this one. It's finally perfect!

Free Music Review: a classic......
Hit: 5 Stars

I can still remember the first time I heard this soundtrack. It was on my family's turntable. We happened to own the original vinyl addition. THE SOUND OF MUSIC (AKA THE SOUND OF MUSIC, in the words of Christopher Plummer who was Captain Von Trapp, in the film) is a classic musical that has really spanned the generations of young and old viewers, for (more than) four decades. For starters, the music is catchy ("The Sound of Music," "These Are A Few of My Favorite Things," and "Edelweiss," as just a few examples). Secondly, this cast was just great! Though, I have a personal preference toward the original cast, with Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel. Nonetheless, Julie Andrews is great here. What a beautiful soprano voice.

This edition features bonus transfers of interviews with those involved in bringing THE SOUND OF MUSIC to the screen. What's more, this is the complete soundtrack (instrumental and music featuring vocals is included here). Definitely a "must buy" for true fans.

Free Music Review: A great recording
Hit: 5 Stars

Here we have it! The most complete soundtrack currently available. I'm hoping, though, they release one with ALL the music (background and all)! This is one that I have latched onto after listening to my mother's copy until it was all but worn through. Although, I do have to tell you (in all disrespectful respect) my brother and I couldn't sing the opening words to the nuns' coming to vespers in the beginning and so replaced the words with "Ookie Bookie of the Great Northwest - yes, it's dumb but we were 10! So, anyway. This is the one, the great bestseller and it sounds fresher than it ever has. Great balance. Great remastering. Some nice, not heard before orchestral moments. An all-around class-act. Lovers of the film, R&H fans, or just those who want to see what the big deal's about will have no problems buying this.
