Stax Records got in on the first floor and rode the Soul train to stardom with this collection of female vocalist powerhouses. These are some of the voices from the past that set the standard for Soul Diva status. Even new young pop stars like Salt-N-Pepa are finding inspiration in reworking tunes like Linda Lindell's What A Man. Right after hearing this CD I went right back online and got Jean Knight's Mr. Big Stuff album to see what else she had to say (B000000ZKJ), great stuff there, too! Not one of these ladies was a one-hit-wonder. Mabel John; oh my God, do you think she's beautiful here? She put Motown Records on the female vocalists map. Get her Complete Collection (B0000TZ7TA). Judy Clay and Veda Brown team up on Private Numbers (B000000ZN4). Margie Joseph had the flair and finesse of a superstar from the very beginnings of her career, starting here with Stax and culminating in the must-have Atlantic Sessions: The Best of Margie Joseph (B000003T3M) released by Ichiban Records of Atlanta, GA. Ruby Johnson has a gorgeous, superb recording in I'll Run Your Hurt Away (B000000ZLV) also on Stax. Ruby is my original Soul diva, no offense to Aretha fans! Carla Thomas has such a fantastic career I could recommend at least 20 recordings; do an Amazon search and check out all the reviews. Love soul & R&B?
