I'm sorry but before I start I just wanted to say that when I saw the 1 star review I started laughing so hard my eyes watered...but anyway I digress....
So once upon a time, in the greatest city the world has ever seen, Detroit, Michigan, my place of birth a musical revolution happened. The precursor to punk was born in the form of The MC5 (motor city five) and The Stooges. I'm not going to go into the whole back story on the album as that page has been written one to many times. But what I will say is that this, The Stooges is one of the most breathtaking rock n' roll albums ever!
Iggy was the one from the beginning, even here on this, The Stooges debut album you can tell he was ready for a change, ready for everything to be his. Though he was Iggy Stooge then. With Ron and brother Scott Ashton on guitar and drums, and Dave Alexander on bass, this was one hell of a lineup. Ron never got the credit he deserved as a guitar player, much like Iggy didn't as a frontman. Aside from maybe the Rolling Stones and the Kinks, The Stooges are the worlds greatest garage rock band.
'1969' is easily one of the greatest and most important songs in the history of rock, it along with the even more important and even greater, 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' are credited by many as being the first punk rock songs. The groove along on 69 is astounding. The really embody the emotion and attitude of the whole movement, though it was about six years away. 'We Will Fall' is pointless. It fails at doing what it tries to do, it does not entertain, and is almost impossible to finish. I know they wanted avant garde but this just didn't work like it did on Funhouse. 'No Fun' for me might just be the best song on the album. As a teenager you really couldn't find a better song to relate to, honestly. 'Real Cool Time' and 'Ann' are not stand outs but are great to listen to still. 'Not Right' and the closer 'Little Doll' go hand in hand, to appreciate one you need the other, with 'Little Doll' being the stronger of the two.
This was the start of something amazing, a start to some of the greatest rock n roll ever played. The Stooges were an institution, even their reunion album The Weirdness was killer! For Iggy and rock n roll fans this is a great listen.

Everything the peace and love vibe of the '60s wasn't the Stooges 1969 debut record was: dangerous, violent, chaotic, mean-spirited, and sex crazed. Iggy Pop's monotone birthday lament, "1969" ("War across the U.S.A. / Another year for me and you / Another year with nothing to do"), pretty much sums up the band's coldly disaffected outlook. Producer and Velvet Underground second banana John Cale lends the proceedings an appropriately ominous feel, although his attempt to transform the Stooges into V.U. clones on the 10-minute-plus "All Fall Down" is the band's weakest studio moment. But Iggy Pop and company more than make up for that misstep with the mind-numbingly ugly-and-great "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and the distortion-drenched "Real Cool Time." --Percy KeeganAlternative Rock Music CDs
