Free Music Review: Worth the 32+ year wait
Hit: 5 Stars

Being in my mid-30s, I never got to see the original incarnation of the Stooges, or their follow-up lineup, Iggy and The Stooges (w/James Williamson) in person. However, as a graduate of the University of Michigan, the hometown of these chaps, an a native of Detroit, I have always been a fan. No, the lyrics and music of the Stooges is not complex nor is it overly thought provoking. But, it is raw, energetic, intense, controversial, and overall amazing. If you were expecting a maturation in the material for this album, I bet you're disappointed. If you were, however, looking for a sequel to the first Stooges album and the follow-up Funhouse, HERE IT IS.
When I popped this into the CD player this morning at 1 AM or so, it was obvious who was coming over the speakers. Not Iggy Pop solo, not Ron Asheton and The Empty Set, and not Scots Pirates (the Asheton bros. do have a limited catalog that they have put out since the final Detroit Stooges show, you know), but a combination of players who when they get together have the magic touch. It was THE STOOGES, in all their glory. The songs on "The Wierdness" have quite a bit of variation to them, including some sax playing by Steve MacKay, and plenty of throwbacks in terms of sound to the first two albums. But, this is no re-hash of old material, but rather an extension of it.
Standout tracks include "Trollin'", "My Idea of Fun", "Greedy Awful People", and "Mexican Guy", although this is a solid effort and comes across as a cohesive unit. Forty minutes (or so) of raw energy and agression, from three guys nearly in their sixties. It does sound raw (ie like it was recorded in a garage), which is not a bad thing as it makes the record fit in perfectly with the first two records. Highly recommended!

The Weirdness Poster

Japanese Edition Contains the Bonus Track "o Solo Mio".
Their rudely urgent brand of earsplitting garage rock and bawdy English blues straddled the '60s into the '70s, but, sadly, the Stooges disintegrated in 1973, leaving their insurgent leader Iggy Pop to power through more than three decades of music alone. But a phone call to the surviving members and siblings Ron (guitar) and Scott Asheton (drums) to play on Pop's 2003 record Skull Ring led to the improbable: a full-on reunion of a band that served as a precursor to the so-called birth of punk rock that would follow three years after its breakup. Employing producer Steve Albini (Nirvana) to capture a similar bare minimum to their legendary three-album catalog--three power chords and an archaic rhythm section co-anchored by bassist Mike Watt (Minutemen, fIREHOSE)--these Stooges let Pop's in-your-face vocals capture the mundane: cruising for women, teenage autonomy, and finding love in a cash machine. But never fear that these late-middle-agers (Pop turns 60 a month after the album's release) feel the need to impede the volume. Songs such as "Trollin'," "Greedy Awful People," "She Took My Money," and "Mexican Guy" detonate like outtakes from 1970's Fun House. And with Iggy Pop showing no signs of slowing down and the Ashetons having nothing else to do, this band of Stooges stands a chance of outliving the first one. --Scott Holter
