Free Music Notes for The WeirdnessFree Music Review: Nice to have The Stooges back... Hit: 3 StarsListen to this album twice.
On the first listen, allow yourself to be swept along by the ephiphany of just how prescient this band was in 1969. If anyone else on this planet - or any other planet or plane of existence, for that matter - had released it today, there would be angry mobs cussing and screaming about how the record was nothing more than a rip-off of the styles of other, older punk bands such as The Sex Pistols and The New York Dolls. And, were it any other band, that would be the case.
The error in that logic lies in the fact that it WAS 1969 when 'The Stooges' was issued. It was followed by 'Funhouse' and 'Raw Power,' two albums every bit as good. And all three were well ahead of anything else at the time. Thus, the music on this album is almost 40 years in the mnaking! So, relish in the joy of good, stripped down attitude-exacerbated rock. Buy this album for that alone and you will find many of the melodies - Free & Freaky being a prime example - will be lodged in your head for days.
On the second listen, you'll have to hear the lyrics and here was where the album exhibits some weakness. By and large, I found them to be less raw and honest, less stunning in their nihilistic fervor and - dare I say it - a bit pedestrian at times. Maybe it's me or maybe it's the company these songs have to keep these days - the misogynistic, racism of some hip-hop and the oft-times psychotic bellowings of hard-core - that have muted the impact.
..or maybe the lyrics are just a bit weak.
Still well worth the price of admission.
Free Music Review: Igg's Last Hurrah! Hit: 1 StarsAt the very least, the band will receive a payday they will remember. This is the reunion that would not happen due to Iggy's hyperinflated ego for what ... sixteen years since it was first speculated? That the Asheton's were incapable of any normal existence without the Igster? I'm sorry, but this mishmash is nothing but a midlife crisis for a guy who has done and lost more than any mere mortal who has ever walked the planet, and that would be James Jewel Osterberg. The fact that the Ashetons would actually show up is amazing. That Mike Watt, bless his heart would sign on is a message from the gods. But the resulting project is a joke. It might make a good instrumental album, but that would be it. I have no idea what epiphany could have roused this sleeping ogre. I would have to hazard a guess that the death of Greg Shaw may have played a part. He was the last cheerleader of The Great Myth and had a lot of us aboard that train, myself included. I'm really stunned. The album sucks, the tours are doing OK, I just hope the other guys get a well deserved cut this time.
Free Music Review: I will keep it simple Hit: 3 StarsI am thrilled they did an album
The music is great but not what I expected
Most of Iggys "lyrics" (he phoned this one in) stink
I pray they get it right next time
I pray there is a next time
Free Music Review: Very Good, but what did you expect from the Stooges? Hit: 5 StarsThis album is music to this listener's ears. LONG overdue. These guys where made for each other. Iggy's solo efforts were spotty, a few very good albums here and there. But to hear all the Stooges all reunited, except for the late great Dave Alexander, may he Rest In Peace,is a real mind blower. These guys sound like they never broke up! Iggy is Punk Rock. He's still questioning and searching after these years. He has defininetly not become domesticated. His songs, especialy with the Stooges are better than He's crafted in years. Now on to the Stooges perfomence, these guys sound GREAT. I think their playing is as innovative as when first started at least, and much better, often,at this point in their musical career's.Overall I have to give this album a five star rating.Just because I've waited a long time for this reunion album to occur. And more importantly it dind't dissapoint!
Free Music Review: This MISERABLE piece of wretched refuse is NOT the Stooges! Hit: 1 StarsI'm disgusted by the willingness of fans of the original Stooges, who made three GREAT albums, amongst the greatest in rock and roll history (particuarly Fun House; Raw Power could never top that) -- in two different lineups, to accept and even think that this is the Stooges; no, it just has their name; it's an Iggy solo record where he realized that a "reunion" would sell more records, due to the increasing knowledge of The Stooges' greatness (which is hard for me to write as they attached their NAME to this WORTHLESS piece of trash)and increasing realizations that people went to Iggy shows to hear The Stooges songs. Yes, but why in the world would ANYBODY want to hear these unfocused, horrendously poor excuses for songs that probably were each "written" in a shorter time than Ron did with the last few songs for the classic first album? This is a complete disgrace, and only Amazon's guidelines keep me from swearing like crazy. This truly taints the NAME The Stooges, a band that ended after the Febraury 9th, 1974 show; the reunion shows were fine to me til they put out this excrement. And Iggy's only good solo album is Kill City (apparently far better in a lost mix which was discarded by James Williamson). You want some great rock n' roll, and the Stooges 3 studio lps and Metallic K.O. and the Raw Power rehearsals that gave us I Got A Right aren't enough?; you want some more great stuff? Try Sonic's Rendezvous Band; try Radio Birdman or New Race; how about the MC5? Or how about The Dictators (particularly Bloodbrothers, D.F.F.D., or Viva Dictators!)? Link Wray? ...Maybe you'd like the Dead Boys!... Los Olvidados, anyone? D.O.A.? How about the Sonics? F--k this s--t. AVOID THIS LIKE THE PLAGUE. This forever taints the name The Stooges, a once mighty name that fulfilled a declaration of clarity, some of the finest music in rock n' roll history. I AM disgusted.
