Free Music Notes for The WeirdnessFree Music Review: Not Too Shabby! Hit: 4 Stars
After discovering The Stooges via Pandora online radio on a Black Flag station, I was instantly hooked. When I first walked into my local Best Buy, I had originally intended to purchase The Stooges album "Fun House" because it not only had the most positive reviews on Amazon, but also I just thought the 30 second samples sounded better than say, their first album's. Sadly, there were no more copies left, and instead I saw The Stooges very first album in a mildly pricey two-disc set. To tell you the truth, I only bought The Weirdness because it had Steve Albini's name on the cover and I was feelin' a little risky. Besides, I've never heard an Albini record that didn't "sound" mindblowingly innovative, regardless of the music. THAT and the fact that it was cheaper than the only other Stooges CD Best Buy had to offer, I finally buckled. I am a HUGE fan of Nirvana(1990's), (and by the way, Steve Albini was responsible for recording Nirvana's "In Utero," easily their best "sounding" album) as well as a HUGE fan of Steve Albini, who was the lead singer for Rapeman, Big Black, and Shellac. I realize that this is not the ORIGINAL Stooges lineup, but regardless, this 40 minute album delivered! Each song is very edgy, ironic, and the drums have that one of kind Albini echo to them! It definitely just about got me a speeding ticket driving down the highway. Some parts have a nice bluesy feel, while others are more like a punk rock song. The music struck me as sounding very "90's alternative," and I really get a since just how much Kurt Cobain was influenced by Iggy Pop's singing style. All of this is coming from someone who is a Grunge-a-holic and is still in the process of discovering The Stooges. Can't wait to listen to their early stuff!
Free Music Review: Raw Power it ain't, but Hit: 4 Stars
there's something damned good about hearing the Stooges again, and Iggy Pop back in his element.
I have taken a dim view of reunions such as these, with rare exceptions, such as the Who. Dead Kennedys are not Dead Kennedys without Biafra fronting them, okay?
From what I've read this reunion has been a going thing for about three or four years, and they finally got it done. Iggy, Gods love him has not been himself the last few recordings. I haven't cared much for more than a few tracks of stuff here and there. Honestly, the last good solo album of his was "American Caesar," and stuff after that was spotty at best.
But Ig and the Asheton brothers got it back together for this. This is not earth-shaking stuff, and will not match the ferocity of "Raw Power." But it stands up pretty damn good. Steve Albini's prod. skills made for a polished, but not too terribly polished set, and the boys cranked out a few good songs.
"Trollin'" and "You Can't Have Friends" are good kickoffs to the CD, and it's typical punk. Crunching guitars, good rhythms and Iggy sounds as good vocally as I've heard him in years.
"Free & Freaky" is good and "She Took My Money" is alright, too. And Iggy's caustic view of the world is right on target on a lot of songs, like "The End of Christianity."
All in all, a good strong set of tunes and they got it together. I think though all will agree that to see Iggy, either on his own or with the Stooges is something you gotta be there to see, in all his power and self-destructiveness.
Good job, fellas. Keep showing these kids what it means to be punk and to rock!
Free Music Review: how do you top the first three? Hit: 4 Stars
This effort is superior to 99% of what is being peddled as "alternative rock" to a public that does not seem to know any better. Does it meet or exceed the incredibly high standard set by The Stooges, Fun House, or Raw Power? No, but hey how many times can one band rewrite the rules and point the way to a whole new genre. These guys charted a new course the first time out, the rest of the world is just catching up. Weirdness is a fun effort that adds to the legacy the Stooges have created. I enjoyed it a lot and so have a lot of my friends, many of whom are new to the Stooges. I was fortunate enough to catch their recent reunion show in Boston and live the new material held up very well and sounded much better. There is no greater frontman in rock than Iggy and the band poured molten white hot lava from the speakers. The crowd stood up when they came on and did not sit down until they left the stage. I am glad you guys made it through all the craziness and excess and I am glad I got to see you all together. Mike Watt was a great addition. After the show everyone was all smiles, they knew they had seen rock history in the making. After the show everyone was taking pictures of the theater marquee as they were leaving with The Stooges and the date all lit up on the sign. Buy all the Stooges in chronilogical order. If you already have the first 3,m buy this, if you don't start with the others. Weirdness is a fine record in it's own right, but if you have to make choices this is how I would do it.
Free Music Review: My Idea of Fun- The Return of The Stooges ! Hit: 4 Stars
Being an Iggy Pop fan, I was excited when I heard the Stooges released a new CD. I heard a few short samples of the songs and was not impressed, basically they do not do the CD justice in short spurts. I bought the CD anyway and I am very glad I did. Unlike a few of the other reviewers I found the CD instantly likeable.
I find the CD, as expected to be a hybrid of 70's sounding Punk/Rock with a bit of an updated sound. There are several very good tracks and nothing I would point out as all out filler. The song writing is filled with satire and Stooges humor, which is one of the things that makes the CD worth repeated listens. The song structure, writing and musicianship is fairly diverse and adds to the overall quality of the effort. Strong tracks include Trollin', The Weirdness, Free & Freaky and Greedy Awful People. However, The real crusher and instant classic track is My Idea of Fun. This tune ranks with anything they have ever done-Fantastic guitar work and just has attitude for days! I would also agree with other reviewers it gets better with repeated listens.
Overall a very solid and interesting return by the Stooges. The CD is easily worth the $9.99 asking price. In today's prefab world of over blown Hollywood hype, its refreshing to hear a band with their own distinct direction in their music.
*I edited my original posting to give a bit more info and hopefully provide a better review.
Free Music Review: Salutations to the Stooges Hit: 4 Stars
To expect the stooges to produce another "Raw Power" is unrealistic. That was a classic. "The wierdness" may not be a classic, but it is still a work that could only be produced by the chemistry of Pop combined with his original comrades, and contains both the simplicity of their debut effort, decades ago, but also contains poetic sober intellectual wisdom mixed in, for instance, the lyrics "The Stooges fight poverty in secret." But they still fight the same things they always have in broad daylight, and with the same bite they always had with expletives, razor guitars, and fun. Iggy asks the question, "I don't know if I'm dead, or just having fun" and I would assure him it is the latter, but fun in this case is not synonomous with foolish. The title track is Iggy crooning like Bowie, "Free and Freaky" is patriotism as only Iggy could parade it, and the rest is a combination of rudeness, compassion, spirituality, anger, solace wrapped in skeletal rock and roll swept out from under the rug of the funhouse, sprinkled with a bit of the glitter from Raw Power, colored blue with some crooning from somewhere in the 80's, a little metallic KO, and not at all a dissappointment. Iggy is more than just a survivor now. He has found that wonderful balance of living responsibly without having to actually give up living. There is less anarchy here, and more conscious design, and it is cool, and it rocks. Welcome back guys.
