Native New Yorkers have long claimed that The Sugarhill Gang were not the first rappers, and now it's official: In July 2007, archaeologists from the University of London excavating a tomb in Egypt made an astonishing discovery - rap lyrics dating from 1470 BC!
The rhyming hieroglyphics were unearthed near ancient Thebes and describe mummification, the Pyramids and the Nile using rhythms, words and attitude that are primitive precursors to the works of contemporary artists like 50 Cent.
"I'm blown away," said historian Sir Neville Winthrop, "These Egyptian raps are almost 3,500 years older than The Sugar Hill Gang's 'Rappers Delight,' which marked the resurgence of the ancient art form in 1979. And the Egyptian raps seem harder - more 'real' - than late 1970's rap."
The raps were translated into English by Sir Neville and are included for readers to be blown away themselves.

Since Ancient Egyptians didn't have recording studios, "The Best of Sugarhill Gang" will suffice as an artifact of early rap. Some critics may call it "corny", which is usually code for "fun and upbeat." You can't go wrong with Chic-y basslines and positive, fun attitudes. 4/5 stars because I find myself skipping past songs to my faves (tracks 1 of course, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8). I'd more highly recommend Essential Mix: Classic Edition by Grandmaster Flash -- cutting edge for the times/captures the times, but still seems timeless.
The Best Of SugarHill Gang: Rapper's Delight Poster
It's not quite the first rap record, or the best, but Rapper's Delight--15 glorious minutes of the bass line from Chic's "Good Times," with a New Jersey crew spieling goofy routines about Superman and bad food on top--is one king hell of a party-starter. After that, they could have filled the rest of the disc with crowd noise and gotten away with it, but the Sugarhill Gang had a bunch of other party-jam hits, notably the almost-as-indelible "Apache" and "8th Wonder." Those songs show up here too, along with some entertaining non-hits and "Showdown," their rap-off with the Furious Five.
