Free Music Review: Metal metal metal

There need to be more bands like this - but I'm glad there isn't because it makes this album all that more valuable, rare, and unique. The comparisons to Sabbath are accurate but not fair - these guys are all their own. If you want some other token comparisons, picture Clutch with more metal, Sabbath hurled a few decades into the future, and maybe add some Probot and a little Kyuss dirty noise. These guys are what Wolfmother might want to be. Nothing is diluted. If you want to call it "stoner rock"... okay, sure... whatever. It's metal at its roots and that's all that matters.
Here's the recipe: tune down the guitar a step or few, crank the Marshall stack up all the way, turn the gain all the way up, and frickin' rock out. Drummer is tight - he's got a double kick and a bunch of toms with a couple of good crash cymbals, and he's banging away on a four count constantly. Bass is so low it probably dips inaudibly below 20 Hz, but it's there and its clean - not distorted, so these guys are sticking to a fairly traditional recipe when it comes to good ol' metal - rock it loud and hard and play so hard your muscles cramp up, and rely on the guitars to give it an edge. There are no overdone digital effects for these guys, no keyboards, no post-recording computer effects. The distortion is all overdriven tubes as far as I can tell. As for the Sabbath comparison, there are Tommy Iommi-like solos (just a bit faster), but much of the space is filled with a resonating low string. There are some dueling guitars (not quite as masterful as Dave Mustaine/Megadeth), lots of rapid ripping on the strings with a palm pressing them to the pickups - yeah it's just great - I play guitar and this kind of stuff is by far the most fun to play.
The song that got me interested in these guys was "Iron Swan" (track 6) because it was on HBO's series Big Love at the end of an episode when Chloe Sevigny's character makes off with a bunch of cash from her father's compound. This song is super heavy and I watched the end credits hoping to find it, but a Google search turned it up. So I bought it and I wasn't disappointed.
The whole elves, magic, middle ages schtick is cheesy and therefore so are the lyrics, but it's good metal. If you like any of the bands mentioned in this review, you'll definitely dig this album.
