Free Music Review: A Most Unconventional Supergroup Effort
Hit: 5 Stars

If there is one thing that the 1980s music scene should be remembered for - it is the emergence of the "Supergroup". A Supergroup is basically a group or project whose members were in other successful bands or established artists in their own right. The mid 1980s saw the rise of groups like "The Power Station" (Robert Palmer, Tony Thompson of Chic, John and Andy Taylor of Duran Duran); Mike + The Mechanics (Mike Rutherford from Genesis, Paul Carrack); General Public (Former English Beat Members Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger, Andy "Stoker" Growcott from Dexy's Midnight Runners). However, possibly the biggest Supergroup that emerged in the late 1980s were The Traveling Wilburys. The Wilburys boast what might be the strongest lineup any Supergroup ever had: George Harrison from The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Jeff Lynne from ELO. The Wilburys - formed by accident or not, had the talent base and the timing for such an effort. Their debut effort - "Traveling Wilburys Volume 1" is reflective of both their talent and the times this collection was released.

Some say the Wilburys were formed by accident. Some may say that Jeff Lynne isn't in the league of the other four Wilburys (I disagree). It is perhaps Lynne that brought the Wilburys together. Lynne was working with Harrison who was making his "Cloud Nine" album. Lynne was also working with Roy Orbison. The story goes that Lynne, Harrison, and Orbison all agreed to sing on Orbison's song. They needed a place to record, so they contacted Bob Dylan to use his studio. Meanwhile word is that George's guitar was with Tom Petty (who was also working with Lynne). The rest is history.

The Wilburys also came at the right time. The 80s music landscape was undergoing a major transformation. The Synth-Pop sound that had dominated the early 80s was now being replaced by a more natural, guitar-laden sound. All five members of the Wilburys are guitar players, so the fit and timing was right. "Traveling Wilburys Volume 1" not only brings a strong guitar-laden sound, it also brings an acoustic spin. There are also some studio musicians (sometimes called "The Sideburys" to provide Sax, Percussion, and Drum work).

The band took a very unconventional approach to this project. For starters - on the liner notes, none of the members use their real name. Each member takes an alias: Dylan (Lucky Wilbury), Petty (Charlie T Jr.), Orbison (Lefty Wilbury), Lynne (Otis Wilbury), and Harrison (Nelson Wilbury). The term Wilbury was what Lynne and Harrison called some faulty recording equipment when George was recording "Cloud Nine". In the liner notes, there is a fictional writeup telling the background of the Wilburys written by Monty Python's Michael Palin. The result is a most unconventional album - but the formula works and is in sync with their music.

The great thing about this collection is there are no bad songs. "Handle With Care" was the first single released from the collection. Harrison has the lead vocals, but all five members do vocals. The other single is "End of the Line" which features everyone on vocals but Dylan. These songs are very good - they played well to the radio because of the hand-offs between the vocals. However it is "Margarita" that might be the most interesting of all the songs that have hand-offs on lead vocals. Most notably Dylan and Petty really shine. "Margarita" is a song that has a bit of a techo rock sound, but also has a strong acoustic element.

"Dirty World" is perhaps the best track on this collection. Dylan does lead vocals on a very catchy song that just blows me away. The other members provide some outstanding background vocals. Listen to how studio musician Jim Horn's Sax folds in beautifully after Dylan sings a line. This song has three parts. The first is Dylan singing the main verse with Wilbury background vocals. The second part is an exchange between Dylan singing lines and the others singing "He Loves Ya". One of the lines Dylan signs is "Trembling Wilbury" which was the original name Harrison suggested for the band (word is Dylan came up with 'Traveling'). The final part is a harmony by everyone going "Dirty World, Dirty World".

Dylan also makes solid lead vocal contributions on "Congratulations" and "Tweeter and the Monkey Man". "Tweeter and the Monkey Man" is another brilliant song about a couple being chased down by an Undercover cop. Dylan sings the song in the form of a narrative. Like in "Dirty World", the other Wilburys provide some outstanding background vocals.

The other songs give the others an opportunity to do some lead vocals. Harrison has lead vocals on "Heading For the Light". The best way to describe this song is that it is a classic styled George Harrison song. It has a Beatles-esque sound to it. Jim Horn again provides some good Sax work. The Roy Orbison lead vocals on "Not Alone Any More" have a 60s music retro-feel to it. Jeff Lynne provides lead vocals on "Rattled". This is a nice song that has also has a retro sound. Petty does lead vocals on "Last Night" which seems like a cross between bluegrass and reggae.

Although there would be another Wilburys album (1990's "Traveling Wilburys Volume 3" - there was no "Volume 2"), this would be the only collection with all five members. Orbison would pass away unexpectedly in 1988 due to a Heart Attack. The remaining four would go on to make that other album - and that would be the last effort of the Wilburys as a group. Lynne would go on to produce 1989's "Full Moon Fever" for Tom Petty and it would feature Orbison and Harrison. The sad thing is most of these songs are never done live. This is a hard album to find - if you can get it, you will more than get your money's worth.

The Traveling Wilburys, Vol. 1 Poster

This is the best record of it s kind ever made. Then again, it's also the only record of its kind ever made.
. . . one of the few rock supergroups actually deserving to be called either super or a group. Rolling Stone, 1988
With a line-up featuring legendary artists Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty, the Traveling Wilburys
were a one-of-a-kind musical phenomenon. The all-star configuration came about when they convened at a Southern California
studio in 1988 to record a b-side for a Harrison s single. They had such a rockin good time cutting Handle With Care that they decided to release it under the Wilburys moniker, and to continue the collaboration with an album's worth of songs. Their
camaraderie is heard in every groove on Rhino's remastered reissue of their now-historic, GRAMMY®-winning debut VOLUME 1.
They followed it up in 1990 with a second full-length, VOLUME 3 the disc was minus Orbison, who passed away in 88, but still
full of the spirit that made their musical brotherhood the stuff of legend. After being out of print for more than a decade, Rhino
reintroduced the classic discs boasting previously unreleased bonus tracks in 2007 as part of a special 2CD/DVD set The
Traveling Wilburys Collection. The expanded VOLUME 1 and VOLUME 3 are now available as individual titles.
