Free Music Review: Finally.

I do love the series, but for me, there always seemed to be something missing in the first two soundtracks (and movies, for that matter). There were a few gems in Twilight, and a few more in New Moon, but it just didn't seem consistent. My guess is that as the franchise grew, it could sink progressively more resources into beefing up the quality of both the movie and music. Maybe the franchise finally found its groove in terms of getting people with the right chemistry involved. Maybe it was both. Whatever it was, this soundtrack delivered, matching the tone of the book note for note. I didn't have to see the movie to feel that. The score was amazing, but I'd expect no less from Howard Shore, though Alexander Desplat did a fine job too. The icing on the cake was that the movie itself FINALLY did justice to the book it represented. Of course, everyone interprets each installment differently, and I'm likely biased b/c Eclipse was my favorite in the series. However, as my favorite, my expectations were higher and I wasn't expecting the movie/music to reach them. Pleasant surprise.
Eclipse (All Yours) is definitely my favorite track, particularly the version on the score that has Howard Shore's orchestral lead-in (Wedding Plans). I love strong heroines, and this song soars, epitomizing the transition Bella finally makes from damsel-in-perpetual-physical/mental-distress to chick-taking-charge-of-her-destiny. Let's Get Lost is fantastic as well, and may as well be a Bella/Edward duet. I agree that the rest of the album is split between light and haunting tracks, with the haunting tracks solidly representing Jacob's battle between hope and despair. All in all, well-worth the price of all three: the score, the soundtrack, and the movie ticket.
