Now I have to admit that this is the first album of theirs that I have actually listened to, so I'm not wholly familiar with their previous work or how good it "once was". I'm not what could be called a hardcore rock fan where I take every bit of music made by a band seriously, and I'm not a person who really cares that much about commercialisation which is likely to be the next accusation thrown at a band like this. Sure to some the lyrics may seem simplistic and childish but all in all this is a very good album that I could listen to over and over again. To be honest I came across this band by chance when watching a music station and the video for bird and the worm started. That was a song that really made me think "Wow this is a damn good song" this convinced me to download the album (Legally of course) and I was nothing short of blown away. This isn't a "Hardcore" rock album where it's constant pointless screaming that you can't really understand, and over the top guitar play.

I feel this is definitely worth the buy as it's an "emo" album that isn't too over the top.

the guitar line for PRETTY HANDSOME AWKWARD is stolen directly from montley crue's DOCTOR FEEL GOOD (written some 20 years ago). As are the lyrics for WAKE THE DEAD ( stolen from suicidal tendancy's WAKING THE DEAD). I wanted to like this album. The used are from my home town. I realize that they helped inovate the emo sound, but that sound is dead. It was interesting for about 10 minutes 7 years ago. Time to move on. Kicking Brandon (drums) out of his own band was a fatal error. The used apparently cannot write anything interesting without him.
The emo scene claims to be descended from real bands like Fugazi and The Rites of Spring, this is a blatent appeal to superior lineage for a credability that emo lacks. Emo has more in common with brittany spears and hair metal than with any real music. Emo is about posturing and fashion and whining.
And as for Burts claim to have been homeless.... to be homeless in utah means that you are mentally ill, or so strung out that you don't care where you fall down. I would wager that his struggle with homelessness was more like "hey man, i am too lazy to get a job can i crash on your couch?" "sure buddy" the end.

The USED sound like a clich? of themselves...is this even possible u ask? Well, yes it is...look at Taking Back Sunday for example...3rd album is merely rehash of what they've done...same style, and a little over the top production to ensure more record sells..i'm assuming*
Over production is noticable when you were once an underground band...this is the case w/ the Used sadly...dont get me wrong, there are some deep parts here that you really have to delve into.."Paralyzed" in particular is tradtional Used, if i can say that, but has their signature jazz-esque riffs that I'm sure most listeners never even notice...
But....if you know anything about this band, than you know that the mainstreams exposure to "screamo/screaming" is largly do in part to this band, which says a lot...the problem is just that, I think the Used went just a little to overboard w/ some effects and sounds that to please the mainstream, if any other band wouldve made some of these songs than it wouldve been awesome, but for some reason they dont sound right here....
It doesnt have to be "hardcore" to be good...the problem is that u cant throw all these elements in and expect a quality soup....instead ending up more like a stew i've tasted a thousand times before...which might sound ackward considering all the explosive interestings elements on here (the soda can opening in "Find A Way" is very unique)
the problem is the lack of a cohesive sound...."Pretty Handsome Awkward" sounds like Avenged Sevenfold...while "Smother Me / Queso" is a clich? of their previous songs...their is no real depth on this album...to put it this way, this album is "..a fake.."
after all this bashing i still can't wait to hear more though, the USED still make more better quality post-hardcore music than anything else out there....
