Free Music Review: A Phenomenal Triumph for a Band that Disintegrated to the Bitter End

Well, The Velvet Underground made three incredible and cutting-edge albums with the MGM/Verve label. Afterwards, they signed a contract with Atlantic Records and made which was to be their final studio album, Loaded. I'm told that even today, many Velvet fans rank Loaded as the band's least effective effort. In a sense, I can understnd where they are coming from. Loaded is neither as inventive nor as creative as the bands three previous studio albums: The Velvet Undergound & Nico, White Light/White Heat, and The Velvet Undergound; aka The Grey Album. Lou Reed and the rest of his bandmates were constantly under pressure to make an album that would sell and be played on the radio. Therefore, they had to make music which had the sounds of what was mainstream or Top 40 during 1970. That is what you hear on Loaded. The mood of each song is not necessarily cutting edge. The sounds are pretty much as commercial and mainstream as you can get. After all, even during the sessions of the band's previous albums, the members were to an extent trying to make music which sold. Afterall, what kind of artist would want to die in obscurity after doing work which they painfully put so much of their mind, body, and soul into? With this said, I will say that Loaded has two of the most memorable and crafted songs on here: "Sweet Jane" and "Rock 'n' Roll". The chords of both songs are smartly arrnaged and has some terrific guitar solos by Sterling Morrsion. The other songs are great to listen to the more you hear them: "Who Loves the Sun" and "Cool It Down" are stright out pop sounding songs; much like The Beatles or The Beach Boys. "New Age" is a slow-moving, easy ballad; along with that it rhymes 'Robert Mitchum' with 'nvever catch him' and contains the line "You're over the hill now/And you're looking for love". You also have "Head Held High", a fairly loud rocker, "Lonesome Cowboy Bill" is a country-flavored song, "I Found A Reason", a 'doo-wop' style song, "Train Round The Bend", a funk-type piece of music, and last, but not least, "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'", a bluesy song. Since this album, is a 2-CD set, you get to hear different versions of the original line-up of songs as well as a collection of songs that Lou Reed would put onto his solo albums; among these are "Ocean"(featured on his debut, self-titled album), "Satellite of Love"(feature on the album, Transformer), and "Sad Song"(featured on Berlin). I didn't realize this until later on, but Maureen Tucker beacame pregnant and had to take some time off. Therefor, Doug Yule brought his kid brother, Billy in to play drums. Now, his playing may not be up there with Maureen's. And maybe, the album might have had more edge, if Lou, Doug, and Sterling had waited until Maureen was well enough to play drums again. Nevertheless, I think Billy Yule's playing was good enough to make the songs worth listening to. After all of the recordings, Lou realizes that the compromises he has made to make an album which sells and can be played on the radio have reached his limit and would hinder his creative process. Therefore, on August 22nd, 1970, Lou Reed abruptly quits the Velvet Underground. Then on September 22nd of the same year, Loaded it released. Ironically, the album did not sell. Thankfully throughout time, people have apprectiaed the album Loaded as well as the VU's other studio albums and have regarded it as one of the most influential albums ever. As a reminder, Lou and his bandmates did not want to repeat themselves; they wanted each of their studio albums to sound different from each other. In this case, The Velvet Underground, took music and lyrics which were mainstream and commercial sounding during 1970, and made them their own. And they did it with plenty of skill. That's why I think Loaded is every bit as good, if not better than the band's three previous studio albums.
