I can't stop listening to this cd. The tunes are catchy,and they range in style. The lyrics are intelligent, but also creative and heartfelt. The harmonies are lovely. Deb Talen and Steve Tannen star as lead vocalists and at back-up. Having both their talents showcased on this album makes it that much better. My friends, my husband and my 17 year old son all like it too. Great album, hard to categorize. Folk? Singer-songwriter? Nothing quite fits. This is a beautiful CD. Deep, cerebral reflection and introspection expressed through quiet, melodic, simple music. Relaxing, yet uplifting and thoughtful. Like a peaceful waterfall in the depths of the forest.
Both voices are unique and pure; they blend together perfectly. No vocal "acrobatics" here. Yet the sound is mature and never boring. The tunes are catchy, infectious. They will stay with you. THIS is what the singer/songwriter genre is all about.
As Joni Mitchell once said of today's pop music... "(It's) Genuine junkfood for juveniles". I truly think the world would be a better place if the "music industry" would promote artists like these with just as much passion as they do the other 'run of the mill, eye candy pop stars' out there.
Free Music Review: Suprisingly amazing

I just bought it because I liked the cover art. That's not entirely true, I did hear one of their songs on the Paste sample CD. Anyway, this is smart music; smart lyrics, smart melodies and smart writing. It's very soft, subtle music (which is where I'm at musically right now). Most of the songs focus on the vocals which means that the listener will listen to the lyrics. I can't say enough about the song "The World Spins Madly On" Blew me away when I first heard it and still does. It sounds like a Fountains of Wayne song, not to mention he sounds a little bit like Adam Slessinger. Never before have I heard a song about the world moving on while I silently sit still and think about the opportunities I've passed up, sung so well.
I also love "painting by chagall" and I don't even like Chagall's work all that much. This is the Belle and Sebastian album for people who don't like Belle and Sebastian.

This is the kind of CD that makes you smile when you listen to it. It's the kind that makes you want to sing along before you even know all of the words. The kind where you think every song on it might be your favorite. The songwriting is thoughtful, heartfelt and sweet (in the best possible sense of the word) while also exhibiting an intellectual edge. The lyrics are well-written without overshadowing the lovely harmonies that Steve and Deb have created. Her voice is evocative of Patty Griffin, but at the same time is unique and absolutely lovely. His voice is just at nuanced and gorgeous, and when they are singing together, it is a study in the beauty the human voice can produce. This is Americana at it's finest. I'm torn between wishing The Weepies all of the commercial success they so richly deserve and wanting to keep them my little (newly discovered...thanks, NPR!) secret. Free Music Review: The Weepies

Infectious and joyful, I literally feel better after listening to their CD. Able to communicate the sorrows faced in life within a validating presense. "Painting by Chagal" is terribly romantic, captures the essence of what the experience of "love" is. "Painting by Chagal" is part poetry, mythology and ordinary reality.
