Free Music Review: White Stripes - 'Elephant' (V2 Records) 4 1/2 stars
Hit: 4 Stars

Review no. 682. 'Elephant' is the duo's fourth CD, as I barely knew who they were when I got to catch Jack & Meg White on this actual tour. Tracks that I couldn't get enough of were the early '70's-ish "Black Math", the straight-ahead rocker "There's No Home For You Here", a Burt Bacharach song "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself", the (sort of) Zeppelin-like "In The Cold, Cold Night" and the disc's ballad "You've Got Her In Your Pocket". I also enjoyed a couple of songs here that at least sounded a bit familiar to me - "Little Acorns" and "Hypnotize". Overall, superb garage / blues rock whose major influences are the Stones, Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, New York Dolls and the MC 5. An absolute must-have.

Free Music Review: Peppermint pride
Hit: 4 Stars

Proving White as much the distorted pop guitar visionary as Cobain with a case of Blues, Elephant's focused fuzz, emanating endlessly from his twangy, intuitive touch, marks a rehashed retro revival rock scene with class.

Free Music Review: white stripes keep it going
Hit: 4 Stars

Like most white stripes albums, Elephant has great songs and weak songs. They have a great writing ability but the performance is, sometimes lacking. Overall, though, I'm a big fan.

Free Music Review: Amazing Guitar Work and Charts; Weak Lyrics
Hit: 3 Stars

I don't know about calling two people a band but these two put out an amazing amount of music. I believe other reviewers that this is one of their best albums and I liked it well enough to later purchased De Stijl. Once in a while they really combine words and music to good effect but they have yet to really hit on both sides of the job to produce something like Bruce Springsteen did on Born to Run, etc.
