Free Music Notes for Get Behind Me SatanFree Music Review: Jack White is a genius Hit: 5 Stars
I will not pretend to be a music critic, even an amateur one, but I will tell you how this album and the White Stripes make me feel. I noticed the editorial review said "least focused." I wonder if that's a compliment or criticism. I see it as a compliment because Jack White and his "sister" could fart a great song. It hardly takes much effort because it flows in his veins. The man's a natural.
Another common complaint about this album; "It's weird." Ok, yeah, if you like your music formulaic and to fit perfectly inside the box, this CD isn't for you. Weird is a word that simpletons use to describe things that frighten them or that they don't understand.
When people start blabbing/complaining about Meg's drumming ability or making an issue of their relationship, stop listening/ reading. They're missing the point. The point is they are simply two people who love music and create it with a passion that is rarely found on the radio these days. Or anywhere for that matter. And the radio is NOT an accurate representation of what music is anyways. The fact that they happened to break into the mainstream tells me that most people are ready to hear something genuine, even amongst all the bile filling up the airwaves.
Onto this album, which is a milestone in their career thus far. Yes, their catalog up to this point is impressive and should be listened to if you're a true fan. But here, Jack seems to relish the freedom of making music that pleases him, whatever whim it may be. This album is full of passion and fury, tenderness and beauty. This tenderness is showcased in "As Ugly as I seem," which contains some of Jack's best acoustic guitar work and touching lyrics yet, reminiscent of "We're going to be friends."
"Red Rain" is another favorite, where Jack wails about standing in the rain, waiting for a girl, maybe to tell her he loves her, maybe to tell her she's a liar. "You think not telling is the same as not lying, don't you?" You feel this song in your bones. It's visceral.
"Instinct Blues" may be obvious in its intent, it may have simple lyrics, but when Jack howls, "Yeaaaaahhh..." any woman, or man if that does it for you, will turn to a puddle of warm water. The series of climatic power chords in this song are so raunchy it makes you blush.
The White Stripes are creating some of the best music of their generation. This album proves again Jack White is one of the greatest musicians of our era, not afraid to do what he wants. You can argue this or ignore it. But, "If there is a lie, then there is a liar too..."
Free Music Review: Amazing Hit: 5 Stars
Where to start with this record. Wow, just so good and so underappreciated. It is such a blend of totally different styles all crammed into one. At first i was a bit turned off at the toned down rock side of things, but then grew to love all the experimentation and it's one of my favorite albums.
1.Blue Orchid 10/10...A rockin' intro, but unusual at the same time. It has a very electric feel to it, and i love Jack's vocals in this.
2.The Nurse 9.5/10...Whaaa..? That was my initial reaction to this piece. Just utterly unusual, a softer song with marambas and another soft touch with heavy layered drums hitting off key every now and then and building into a crashing ending. Great stuff.
3.My Doorbell 10/10...Such an upbeat song, piano driven and i just absoulutely love it.
4.Forever For Her (Is Over Me) 9/10...A slower song, but eventually builds into a great piece. Easy to sing along to.
5.Little Ghost 8.5/10...I was initially turned off by this song. Probably most were. It's so weird and quick and has a western feel to it, and i came to realize that it's great.
6.Denial Twist 10/10...Another song like My Doorbell, just incredibly catchy, and i love the lyrics.
7.White Moon 9/10...Another song that slows things down a bit. An overall good song, not one of my favorites.
8.Instinct Blues 8.5/10...Guitar is brought back into a song for the first time in awhile. A very bluesy song, and the ending is great, but it does tend to drag a bit.
9.Passive Manipulation 9/10...Another very unusual track clocking in at 0:35, it features Meg on vocals and i just love it.
10.Take, Take, Take 10/10...Yet another very catchy piece and i love the scenario Jack creates with the lyrics. Arguably one of my favorites.
11.As Ugly As I Seem 9.5/10...Probably my favorite slow song on the cd. Jack really sings great on this song, and the acoustic rhythm is great.
12.Red Rain 9/10...Another rockin' piece. This is such a good song, and very experimental, and the bridge is one of my favorite parts on the whole album.
13.I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet) 8.5/10...A very fitting end to this magnificent record. Jack sings about missing his mother, and it's a very good song.
The White Stripes are such a creative force to be reckoned with, and they've done it again in which what i think is there best work.
Free Music Review: As expected...amazing! Hit: 5 Stars
The White Stripes' previous album "Elephant" earned them a grammy and was voted Time Magazine Top 10 Albums of the Year. The year after that, Jack White produced Loretta Lynn to her grammy. With such a tall order to fill, how did the Stripes go about making their next album? They produced it in 2 weeks. Heck, artists take longer to write one song for their album. But don't be fooled, in it's simplicity lies it's genius.
I guess a way to put it would be...this album tops "Elephant" the way "Elephant" topped "White Blood Cells". All The White Stripes' signature sounds are there and they are as entertaining as ever. I have all of this band's albums and their music has always been unique but "Get Behind Me Satan" has got to be the best so far. The guitar riffs are killer, and like the Amazon.com reviewer said, there's also pounding pianos this time around, Meg's drumming is casual yet outstanding, Jack's bluesy vocals fit the songs perfectly, and we also get intelligent lyrics laced with humour, wit and sarcasm.
In my opinion, The White Stripes is one of the most creative bands out there today. From their catchy songs to those superb videos, they have always put out the best for their listeners and fans. All being done as honest as possible. It's not hard to see what this band relies on in the release of this album, and nope, it's not glossy production, big-named producers or guest artists...it's talent, and I'm sure that it won't go unnoticed. I would do a track by track commentary, but I believe each person should have their own thoughts and opinions about the music here but personally, every song is crafted perfectly thus the 5-star rating.
I am someone open-minded and I'm not going to say that this album caters for everybody. But for those who have been fans of the Stripes all this while, they won't be disappointed and for those who wants to start listening to their music, this album is as good a starting point as any. In short, the Stripes continue to do what they did so wonderfully in "Elephant". Make no mistake, this album kicks a$$ and it blows other rock bands to dust. Another fantastic album from an amazing duo.
Free Music Review: Best Effort From Jack and Meg Hit: 5 Stars
This is an advanced warning for first time listeners of this album: don't quit listening to it after one try, give it a chance because it is worth your time. Jack and Meg have thrown their fans a gigantic curveball with Get Behind Me Satan. Gone are guitar solos and alt-rock numbers of their previous album. Instead Jack composed most of these songs on piano, and accoustic guitar.
I was put off the first time I listened to this. Blue Orchid certainly rocked hard, but the riff was heavily proccessed, not at all what I expect from a bluesy Jack White. Then The Nurse completely throws you off kilter. The lyrics are bizzare and a vibrophone with a crunching guitar just made things even more surreal.
So I got over my initial shock that this band has started to suck and listened to it again. The album really opens up once ou get rid of your expectations. Lyrically, Jack is at his most confounding and unsettling. His fractured paranoid love songs on Elephant have evolved into someting more cloistered and personal, sometimes even self loathing. Just listen to Forever for Her and you'll see what I mean. The lyrics are also bitter. Take, Take, Take is about a obsessed fan who finds Rits Hayworth in a bar and needs just more more souvenir and momento and one more drink before he'll leave her alone. Clearly celebrity and Jack White don't mesh really well. Meg's brief cameo on Passive Manipulation is also very strange. If it's riffing on the whole brother/sister thing I don't know, but it's a weird song.
Jack's descent inward is also reflected in the musical style. Most of the songs are rootsy exercises with Jack showing off his surprising good composition skills. The stuff on this album is much more intimate than on pervious efforts. That isn't to say their isn't moments of ear bleeding noise. Just listen to the fractured guitar on The Nurse and the off-kilter rocker Red Rain.
I think this album is a classic and the best yet from The White Stripes. Give it a chance or you'll be missing out on something great. And if you get a chance to see them live, they are amazing.
Free Music Review: Disappointing at first, but it gets better with every listen Hit: 5 Stars
Get Behind Me Satan, follow-up to 2003's Elephant, delivers another 13 tracks of originality and experimentation that you would expect from the White Stripes. Upon first listen, I was bored with it. Everytime I listen to this album it gets better though, and I notice things that I didn't the last time. Now it seems like a lot of people are dogging this album because Jack White doesn't play guitar as much. While we all have to love his skills on the guitar, any real Stripes fan knows the diversity and creativity they put into each and every album and looks forward to what they bring each time. They put a piano and marimba in, and it works wonderfully. So for anybody wanting to hear another Elephant or White Blood Cells, go listen to those albums because it is a little different here.
I have listened to this album in its entirely at least 20 times, and I can honestly say there is not a bad track on here (except Passive Manipulation which is filler). Blue Orchid starts the album off with a bang, an excellent song sure to be classic. The Nurse follows, complete with marimba and a guitar solo. That is a strange track but a pleasant surprise. The Doorbell is track 3, probably the catchiest and most fun song on the album. Forever For Her might be my favorite here. It is the best ballad by the Stripes in my opinion and it is a highlight here to say the least. Little Ghost has a bluegrass sound that I don't care for, but it is lowly growing on me. I think it is one of the weakest links on this album though. Other great tracks include The Denial Twist, White Moon, Red Rain and As Ugly As I Seem.
The final verdict in my opinion is this: the album falls short of White Blood Cells greatness, but I am partial to that album (one of my favorite ever). Even still, this is a 5 star album. Amazing seeing how it was recorded in two weeks. Get Behind Me Satan displays a couple of true artists who are growing musically and creatively through each album, and they are cementing themselves as one of the best bands around today. Definately pick this album up and listen carefully, I can't recommend it enough.
