Free Music Review: Not so ICKY Thump

At first, I was angry at The White Stripes. I was boycotting them due to their cancelling of an appearance in August at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. So... I was hesitant to support them through buying their new album. In fact, I had staged a boycott... in my head at least. I have to say that I don't regret biting the bullet. This CD is my new favorite CD. I can't get enough of it! There is such an array of genres carefully intermingled so as to delight each and every sense. If you were, are or plan to be a White Stripes fan at any point, then this album is a must-have. There is one song where Jack and Meg are talking. If you can get over Meg's whiny, cutesy voice, then you will be addicted to this compilation. RAWK!Free Music Review: Who are the ad wizards that came up with this one?

Offering the album on a USB drive is a neat gimmick, but for a hundred bucks this is just ridiculous. You can buy the album for 10 bucks, a 1 gig USB drive for under 10 bucks... so we're supposed to pay $80 for stickers?

Well on first listen i didn't particular care for the album. I still don't care for it that much. It has some good songs but it just seems Jack White has ran out of steam. The raconteurs album was actually better than this. Perhaps White has forgotten what it takes to make a great album and can't do it all anymore. He may need some help and i really don't think Meg White does much when it comes to albums like icky thump. She's an adequate drummer at best. On the other hand Jack White has always been full of talent but the last two have dropped the ball (even Elephant to an extent). Maybe Jack White just isn't as talented as i thought he was or maybe he just isn't who i thought he is. After two clunkers in a row the next Stripes album isn't gonna be an automatic buy for me like the last few. White still has some good rock songs left in him but maybe he needs to take a little longer between albums and focus a bit more on what he is releasing or maybe he just doesn't care. Fans either like it or hate it but he at least is still doing what he loves. I say good for him but I'll need something better than Icky Thump before or I pick up the next one. Despite the quality of their last outing I was still leaning towards Elephant as their best record as it had certainly spoiled me as to what to expect from this exceptionally gifted band. However, I can say that this time out they have outdone their best efforts and Icky Thump rises to the top of their artistic exertions. I mean come on, how can anyone say differently after you hear the bagpipes kick in on track seven?
