Free Music Notes for Endless Wire AlbumFree Music Review: Strong Effort - Better Than Expected Hit: 4 StarsAnyone expecting to hear another Who's Next or Quadrophenia will be disappointed with Endless Wire. However, if you have an open mind and accept the fact that half the original members of the band are dead, then you will be pleasantly surprised by The Who's latest effort.
Gone are the breakneck jams of the past; instead, Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey have put together an interesting mix of folk/rock songs that improve upon repeated listenings. Clearly, Townshend realizes that the band's strength lies with the songwriting/singer relationship between himself and Daltrey. And he has written some strong numbers here, including "The Man In A Purple Dress," a whack at organized religion, and "Tea and Theater," a somber, powerful song about loss and redemption. Townshend's other acoustic numbers, "God Speaks of Marty Robbins" and "You Stand By Me" are equally affecting and wonderfully played by Townshend.
Rock fans looking to hear some of Townshend's signature electric guitar will enjoy "Fragments," with it's New Age-ish lyrics and music, and "Mike Post Theme," which stands alongside some of the band's best latter-day numbers. Daltrey is particularly powerful on this song, sounding 20 years younger than his age. And Townshend grinds out some nasty guitar licks on "It's Not Enough," perhaps the most commercial track on the CD.
The much-talked about mini-opera, Wire and Glass, appears here as a 10-track suite and it's a mixed bag. Some of the stronger songs, such as "We Got A Hit," "Sound Round" and "Pick Up The Peace" appear undernourished and could use some expansion. Fans will be left scratching their heads wondering why Townshend devoted only about a minute-and-a-half to each track. Some of the other tunes on the mini-opera appear to be filler and would be better suited to one of Townshend's "Scoop" albums. If he had expanded the better tracks and dropped the filler then Townshend would have a stronger piece of music. Despite those flaws, the mini-opera has enough interesting music and lyrics to warrant a listen, particularly the tracks mentioned above, and "Mirror Door" - the most Who-like song on the CD.
Wisely, the band has included extended versions of "We Got A Hit" and "Endless Wire" which demonstrate the quality of the material.
Overall, Endless Wire does not rank with the band's best work, but there are quite a few highlights to make this a worthwhile addition to any rock fan's collection. This is not The Who of old, and if you can accept that and take it for what it is, you will find it quite enjoyable. It is better than anyone could have expected, given the band's 24-year layoff in the studio. And it is certainly better than anything they've done since Keith Moon died. Townshend and Daltrey sound very motivated and it shows on Endless Wire.
