Free Music Notes for The Kids Are Alright

Free Music Review: Way more than all right
Hit: 5 Stars

This raw record captures the live sound of some of The Who's most beloved, well-known songs. Recorded in a piece-meal fashion and unapologetically grainy -- both the movie and this soundtrack to it -- "The Kids are Alright" has a 70 percent Zeppelin feel with about 30 percent of The Beatles thrown in, a good combination you can't go wrong with. The Who should be applauded for their spontaneous and wild style, especially these days, when everything in entertainment seems so choreographed. This album epitomizes The Who's unique flair for cutting loose on stage.

At the start is "My Generation," an easy pop song with a great chorus and surprisingly brash message that still gets its point across today in fine fashion. The Who are innocently introduced before the song starts, then promptly smash their instruments at the song's finale. These guys were immensely talented at writing harmonic pop nuggets like "I Can't Explain," "Happy Jack," "I Can See for Miles" and "Magic Bus," but also great at belting out the rawest garage rock you can imagine. In fact, The Who were garage rock before the term was even associated with rock bands. Somewhat similar to Led Zeppelin (crazy drummer, golden-boy lead singer, arena-rock guitarist, quiet bass player) and easily as influential, these rugged British misfits act like young gods in the worthwhile documentary "The Kids are Alright." They were cocky and crazy both on- and offstage, as the movie fully attests to. As this album plays on, you can see The Who evolve musically, from short, classic pop songs to longer, harder, somewhat more complex compositions, starting with "Young Man (Blues)", a rip-roaring song that has the obligatory blaring guitar, flailing drums and a pitch-perfect Roger Daltrey yelling his head off. The deceased John Entwistle, with his higher-pitched singing voice, gives Daltrey a run for his money as he sings "My Wife," one of many classic Who songs.

The Who are one of those rare bands whose live act in the early years probably exceeded their studio albums, based on just energy alone. These guys were born to play rock music together, and this record features the original ragtag lineup. Like Pearl Jam, there's an ever-so-slight sloppiness to The Who's stage act that is not only expected but also acceptable. Case in point: the live version of "Won't Get Fooled Again." The performance of this song is so electric (no pun intended), you'll get goosebumps at its beginning and end as the liquidlike keyboard bits kick in and Keith Moon frantically flails away as if his life depends on it. It's great stuff on CD, all these years later, but it must have been mind-blowing when witnessed live.

The Kids Are Alright Poster

Limited Japanese Version Featuring Lp Style Slipcase. Digitally Remastered
Having been involved in one of the most painfully overwrought rock films ever produced (Ken Russell's Tommy), it was only just that the Who should also be the subject of one of the best rockumentaries ever--Jeff Stein's The Kids Are Alright. Inveterate Who fan Stein largely eschewed interviews and critical overinterpretation, instead wisely focusing on the band's musical performances as captured on TV appearances and in concert. That sensibility makes this soundtrack a rare showcase of the Who at their performing peak, gathering many previously unreleased live performances ("My Wife," "Young Man Blues," a medley of "Join Together/Roadrunner/My Generation Blues") some key outtakes (the anthem "Long Live Rock"), and especially some great TV turns that could occasionally be literally explosive, à la their incomparable Smother Brothers appearance. Stein's only staged performances, "Baba O'Riley" and the cynically anthemic "Won't Get Fooled Again," turned out to be as historic as they were electric. Filmed just months before Keith Moon's untimely 1978 death, the performances stand as his final public performance. This is the Who at their best; it seldom gets any better. --Jerry McCulley
