Free Music Notes for The Wizard Of Oz: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack - The Deluxe EditionFree Music Review: Enough about the presentation, what about the QUALITY! Hit: 2 StarsIs it a beautiful boxed set? Well, its sturdy, has a nice cover, great booklet inside, so so pictures on the actual cds. But whats the bottom line here? For me it was the actual remastered recordings, and I have to tell you, they are simply awful. QUALITY OVER QUANITY FOLKS!!!! Yes they have included some really rare stuff here, and that is nice to have, but what I really wanted was a great remastered version of these classic songs, and I can't imagine that anyone would think these are even average.
Now don't get me wrong, I do understand the age of the source recordings, and certainly would not expect miracles, but in this day and age I certainly expect better than this. So I am gonna give it to you straight! Forget the booklet, forget the extra tracks, forget the boxed presention.
Get ready for unacceptable HISS folks. And I mean HISSSSSSSS! More HISSS than an army of deadly snakes could produce on their angriest day. This is the kind of hiss that overwhelms the wind noise from your car window. HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! To all of my dedicated audiophiles out there, I say, that I am confident that even I could have done a better job with simple software, a simple Macintish, and little experience. It is easier than ever to reduce or eliminate hiss while still preserving the high end of the audio tracks. I am not kidding here, but this "remastered recording" reminds me of the days in the 80's when I would take my tape recorder and set it next to the TV speaker and hope for the best.
The vocalists are completely in dissaray here. Sometimes to out in front, sometimes way in the back, and dear God, like the poor scarecrow, sometimes a whisper somewhere in an echo. Hearing Dorothy and Scarecrow sing "off to see the wizard" the firt time together is simply disorientating. It's like Dorothy is walking hand in hand with a ghost or something. The Beatles made it sound majectic on "Free as a Bird," this is just creepy.
The orchestration is just one big muffled mess. NO HIGHS at all, and of course, the HISSS overpowers the beautiful delicacies of the score. I know I know, "but it was a MONO recording you big dope!" Yes, I understand that but come on folks, when I put my original VHS recording from the 80s on it sounds a million times better than this so called "remastered" mess.
And then their is the distortion, yep, distortion. You know the kind you would get (again, back in the 80s and 90s) when you were recording a cd to cassette but had your recording level set to high? Geeze, its bad enough they cant take out any hiss, but to then over power their "tools" by boosting the volume to high? The muchkins "Lullaby Leaugue" is almost painful with that distortion. How can this happen?
Bottom line folks, their is no excuse for this. Read all the 5 star reviews you want but notice hardly any comment about the actual audio quality. I couldn't wait to get this, and man, I am heartbroken. Our best hope is that perhaps we can get a new soundtrack based off of the recent BLU-Ray edition. That might be our salvation here. The copyright on this edition is 1995, so lets hope 2009/2010 will redeem this travesty!
The Wizard Of Oz: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack - The Deluxe Edition PosterLions and tigers and bears, the yellow brick road, gamboling midgets, warnings scrawled high above by a skywriting witch: No movie ever imprinted itself on young imaginations or endured in adult memory more than MGM's classic 1939 musical, and no movie score ever hooked as forcefully into our collective cultural memory. This exemplary soundtrack finally treats this deserved classic to a thoughtful and comprehensive rendering that confirms the enduring power of Harold Arlen's original music and E.Y. "Yip" Harburg's lyrics. On film, the songs unreeled as a mixture of discrete songs and multithemed medleys with frequent reprises, a presentation preserved here, epitomized in the "Munchkinland Musical Sequence." If not as concise as Bobby McFerrin's legendary, hilarious concert compression of the entire musical story, this telling of The Wizard of Oz relives the film just as vividly. "Over the Rainbow" is presented here with multiple alternate takes, making it a must for fans of Judy Garland. --Sam Sutherland
