Free Music Review: Hung Up On Odessey and Oracle.
Hit: 5 Stars

I purchased this album on March 18th after buying the Zombie Heaven box set, and fell in love with it immediately. As a newcomer to the group, I can honestly say I love most everything about them in every phase of their short-lived 60s career, but nothing prepared me for this opus of extraordinary richness and depth. It is like taking a deep inhalation of breath for 70 minutes, and exhaling at last with the knowledge that you have inhaled the scent of something so unique and euphoric that mere words cannot describe the pleasure of the experience.

Be it mono or stereo, I listen to the entire thing raptly, and can never fully take in the brilliance of what has been experienced (okay, it's still really blowing my mind). Don't want to do another Forever Changes, but here goes anyway:

"Care of Cell 44:" Bright, poppy tune about the anticipation of someone returning to society soon. Rather insecure study, as our person on the outside wants to believe things will be alright. This remains to be seen...

"A Rose for Emily:" Lovely delicate piece about a spinster who will probably die without even a cat to mourn her. Enchantingly neo-classical, but very pointedly moody and contemplative.

"Maybe After He's Gone:" Quietly epic and understatedly desperate. Yeah, I've been there too. Didn't happen for me either, but can relate to the earnestness.

"Beechwood Park:" Lovely fictional Chris White piece about an old girls school that got him in trouble with a head mistress. Nice tremelo guitar and sweet harmonies.

"Brief Candles:" Oh, so near and dear to my heart. "Her sadness makes her smile." Alternating vocals that weave a web of depressing, yet magical aura.

"Hung Up On a Dream:" My absolute favorite track on this album, inspired by the art of meditation. Such a gloriously, well-layered piece of "psychedelic" pop(This album is NOT psychedelic, though most people think so. The Zombies were not drug users!), and so breath-takingly gorgeous I can't believe how overlooked this album is for this song alone!

"Changes:" Stellar acapella performance of a poetic commentary on people who become someone else once they become wealthy. These guys certainly weren't, and there were stories of people moving pianos about while they were recording this track at Abbey Road.

"I Want Her, She Wants Me:" Sounds more like a leftover from the British beat material, except the harpsichord and folk edge save it from being dated for this album.

"This Will Be Our Year:" Delightful bit of romantic pop fluff that reminds me of some of the forecoming Colin Blunstone solo works. Makes me swoon just thinking about it.

"Butcher's Tale (Western Front 1914):" For the last time, this is not a reference to Vietnam, hence the title, although I can see the allusions. Creepy, dark, reference to flies on corpses does not exactly do anything for me!

"Friends of Mine:" A song naming personal friends who are so happily in love. Catchy and bright, at first I thought, god, I wouldn't be happy if all my other friends were in love while I'm lonely and down. Colin says his "Aah!..." at the end was to rebuff some of that appearance, and rightly so!

"Time of the Season:" Undisputed jazz fusion classic, and the forerunner to future Argent projects. Colin originally hated this song, "but now he likes it." Might as well, bud, because you're stuck doing it forever! Great keyboards by Rod Argent, and Colin's vocal is so cool and sexy, who would have guessed?

All in all, I cannot even begin to do this masterpiece justice, and have been dragging my heels on it. All I can say is, you must own this because it is an absolute paragon. Worthy of your time, you will never stop listening to it if you pick it up. God only knows that after a few months, I'm going to need a few more copies. Enjoy, and I sincerely mean that!

Odessey and Oracle Poster

1998 reissue on Big Beat of their 1968 album featuring the smash 'Time Of The Season'. As the 30th anniversary edition of the recording, it contains both the stereo & mono versions of the original LPs 11 cuts and five bonus tracks: mono & stereo versions of 'This Will Be Our Year', plus 'A Rose For Emily' (Alternate Version 2), 'Time Of The Season' (Alternate Mix) and 'Prison Song aka Care Of Cell 44' (Backing Track), the last three of which are previously unreleased. 27 tracks total. Also contains the original cover art. 1998 Ace Records release.
The Zombies were perhaps the most British-sounding of all British Invasion groups, and yet they never scored a hit record in their native U.K. The band released three great singles over here, including the wonderful "Time of the Season," which concludes this 1968 masterpiece, frequently called Britain's version of Pet Sounds. This 30th anniversary edition presents both the stereo and mono versions (and there are substantial differences) of the melancholic, keyboard-dominated pop that flowed from Rod Argent and bassist Chris White. The Zombies' main songwriters explored "psychedelic" themes from odd angles. Here songs address a letter to a girlfriend in jail ("Care of Cell 44") and war ("Butcher's Tale"). There's even a "flowers-in-their-hair" hippie anthem (the gorgeous "Hung Up on a Dream"). Totally of its time, and, nevertheless, a timeless classic. --Bill Holdship
