Free Music Notes for Monk's Dream

Free Music Review: Essential Monk, but not quintessential
Hit: 5 Stars

When this album first appeared--the initial Columbia release by the musician who had been relatively obscure even among the jazz community before his so-called break-out album of 1957, "Brilliant Corners" (Riverside)--it was greeted with less than universal enthusiasm by fans and critics. On the heels of big record sales by Brubeck, Miles and even Mingus, Columbia decided to let go of its fading, overly familiar greats (viz. Duke Ellington) and add the rising star of Thelonious Sphere Monk to its line-up of jazz heavyweights. The result is a fine session by Monk and arguably his most consistent (certainly longest-standing) tenor player, Charlie Rouse. As characteristically "Monkish" as the date is, there's nothing exceptional about it. In addition to the interplay between Monk and Rouse, the album features Monk's revisioning of the stride-piano tradition ("Body and Soul," "Just a Gigolo"), thus placing him squarely within the jazz tradition as much as demonstrating the qualities that made him unique--a "modernist" as judged by any generation--though sounding much the same in the 1960s as he had in the 1940s.

"Blues Five Spot" may be the most accessible port of entry for some listeners--at least for those unfamiliar with the American Songbook and its interpretation by pianists such as Tatum and Peterson. It's a blues (scarcely more than 3 minutes in duration), and Monk's solo, as usual, is as accessible as it is inventive. In fact, one of the better musical analyses of a Monk improvisation, or "extemporaneous composition," is that by Martin Williams (in "The Jazz Tradition") of this seemingly minor piece.

Noticing that Amazon's 2nd-best-selling Monk album also comprises only his work for Columbia, it's easy to encourage anyone who's serious about Monk and American music to pass this one up and go to the album that's now appearing in the #3 slot: "The Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall - '57"). Not only is it some of the best music recorded by either soloist, but it certainly must rank as the most important new release in jazz of the present millennium. (And for the listener interested in "Brilliant Corners," nothing less than the original recording on Riverside will do. Columbia's decision to re-record the '57 date in a shorter version, using a "smoother" sound (i.e. a slick, electrifying Creed Taylor mix or a Teo Macero '70s Miles date rather than an elemental, ultra non-slick construction from the flesh and blood conception of Monk) strikes me--like most non-Monk performances other than those by Sphere, Walter Davis Jr., and Carmen McRae--as a travesty of the pulsating heart and soul of the original maker).

Although Monk's repertory of original compositions was limited to approximately 70 tunes, there are some not on this collection that should be considered required listening. "Monk's Mood" has perhaps never been played better than on the aforementioned Monk-Coltrane concert recording. For "Mysterioso" check out the version on "Sonny Rollins, Vol. 2" (Blue Note). It features Sonny, J.J. Johnson, and pianists Horace Silver and Thelonious Monk--all performing on this single track!
