Free Music Review: Oops! Looks like you forgot to fill in a required form field
Hit: 5 Stars

DISCLAIMER: I do not smoke pot.

Since this is my fifth Thievery Corporation album, I think I am licensed to write a review. Let's start with the highlights:

1. OMG IT'S THE FLAMING LIPS! (Sound of screaming hipsters)
2. I don't care for rapid-fire monotone Jamaican rap. That said, this track has a wicked beat.
3. Bought the single - made me fear this album would be full of propaganda. Why would I invent such nonsense?
5. I love this track. Timeless, ethereal, and sooooo cooool. But I can't understand the words.
9. I love the intro for this song. Nobody treats a beat like Thievery Corporation.
10. Am I the only one in the world who notices that David Byrne can't carry a tune? This is now my favorite David Byrne song because only sings quarter-notes or shorter in it.
11-the end. Reminds me of Sounds From the Thievery Hi-Fi in its simplicity.

Last off, if you liked any of TC's earlier albums, you will like this one. If you are an aspiring indie snob, buy this album. If you're trying Thievery Corporation because you heard them on the Garden State soundtrack, YOU ARE SUCH A POSEUR! But buy it anyways. In doing so, you may be helping to liberate oppressed peoples all over the world somehow.

Free Music Review: A Very Smart "Dubbed Down" Curriculum!
Hit: 5 Stars

After the perfection that is "The Richest Man in Babylon," you can imagine my expectations were quite high for this latest release from the masters. After living with this for a couple of weeks, I can certainly say that they have succeeded wildly. The excellent songs are almost too numerous to mention and their forays into dub are immaculate. Much has been made of the known guests on the album, and those tracks all shine. Perry Farrell absolutely becomes a world music star on "Revolution Solution." I knew he was always interested in world music, but he shows why that might be a good career path for him. David Byrne on "The Heart's a Lonely Hunter" sounds like a mashup of "Blind" and "Nothing But Flowers" from Talking Heads' groovefest, "Naked." The song fits him to a T, and he shows why I've always loved his music - it's FUN!! "Warning Shots" gets my early vote for throwdown dub jam of the year, as it's probably the hardest thing that TC has done. Like any TC album, a good pair of headphones is a must for fully appreciating the little details Rob and Eric throw into the mix. It's early yet, but this album will certainly show up on my end of the year list, as it's hard to imagine much topping this masterpiece!

Free Music Review: The music is top notch but TC are hypocrites
Hit: 5 Stars

First thing, is first this is a top-notch album. You cannot go wrong with Perry Ferrell and David Byrne

My gripe is with The Thievery Corporation's hypocrisy. The last two albums have had sort of an anti-corporate, struggle of the oppressed theme.

What is funny is that the 18th St lounge in DC is perhaps the most pretentious place in the city with its 8 to 10 dollar drinks and a strictly enforced dress code.

In addition, these guys are not struggling artists. They are a success story of American capitalist entrepreneurship; they own a lounge, a record label and have a successful band.

They have lyrics like:
"The toil of the many goes to the fortunate few"
"Your culture of greed has got to end"
I think that TC could count them selves among the fortunate few, I'm sure that they are in the upper 1% of incomes. In an interview I read that they get suits cusom made in Italy.

I'd like to see one of the impoverished that is sung of on Thievery's albums try to get a drink at 18th Street Lounge.

They are two of the richest men in babylon...

Free Music Review: Best offering from Thievery Corporation yet
Hit: 5 Stars

Although there are already numerous reviews of this CD, it's so good that I felt I needed to show support for it in some way. This is a bit of a departure from their more dub-oriented albums, but in no way does that diminish this release.

This album has more of an Eastern (Indian & Arabian) feel to it, as well as some South American influences (occasional tracks on this CD remind me a bit of the inimitable Gran Hotel Buenos Aires (also published by ESL, surprise surprise!) - an absolute must-buy if you're a downbeat/lounge/dub enthusiast). That isn't to say that they don't head back to their dub roots (see tracks like Amerimacka), but this just feels like a very mature offering from a band that has grown immensely over the years.

As some other reviews note, the CD isn't without its weak tracks, but with so many crammed onto one CD, you really cannot go wrong. I would definitely rate this as Thievery Corporations best release to date - perhaps only matched by their recent Babylon Dub Rewind...excellent in its own right, but clocking in at only about 1/3rd the length of The Cosmic Game.

Free Music Review: Making it look easy
Hit: 5 Stars

After owning this album for many months, I am still quietly amazed. Can an album be political, spacey, aggressive, relaxed, serious, sexy, rocking, jazzy, trippy, and funky...yet flow and blend together seamlessly? It can, and The Cosmic Game makes it look easy. Like true gourmet chefs with a nice supply of exotic spices and ingredients, the masterminds at Thievery Corporation have crafted an amazing delicacy.

My first impression, like that of many reviewers, was that this was business as usual for these guys. But there's something to be said for that. This group challenges itself to constantly enrich and inform its aesthetic, reaching further and expanding its repertoire of styles and source material. The fact that it doesn't look like they're trying is a testament to how good they are. This album builds on what they've learned, ambitiously stretches, and ultimately succeeds.

Garza and Hilton are nothing if not adventurous. They continue to enrich our lives with their masterful synthesis of rhythm and music. The Cosmic Game is another of their recipes definitely worth sampling.
