Free Music Notes for Sounds From the Verve Hi-FiFree Music Review: A Smart Compilation from Verve Records Hit: 5 Stars
Those masters of chill-out Thievery Corporation pull together some Latin and Brazilian jazz gems on this wonderful compilation. Most of the names won't be familiar to the average music listener, and some of the tracks date as far back to the 1960s, but this disc will no doubt appeal to jazz snobs and casual listeners alike. Stan Getz and Sergio Mendez set the tone with their mellowed-out seductive tracks, and the disc doesn't disappoint for the rest of the ride. The legendary Cal Tjader also stands out as well with the lovely "The Fakir." For those not sure where to go for a unique one-stop guide to chill-out jazz, "Sounds from the Verve Hi-Fi" is a good disc to pick up.
Free Music Review: Brilliant selection of Verve tracks of the 60's Hit: 5 Stars
Many people above have pointed out that this is not the new work from Thievery Corporation, or the tracks are not like other ESL compilations. True, and those facts are quite clearly stated on the album cover, I never had any misunderstanding and was not disappointed at all.On the contrary, I was more than impressed by the tasteful selection of music by the Thievery guys. It's like their BACK TO MINE cd. It also serves as a rough guide to some old Verve records. If you like the Thievery Corporation, these are the music that helped shape who they are now. Isn't it nice to try the original flavours sometimes? One of my best buy this year!
Free Music Review: This is where they get their inspiration Hit: 5 Stars
I remember the first time I listened to a record by Thievery Corp. I became instantly aware of how different their sound is. I could not help wonder where this pair gets their inspiration, and what serves them so well in their constant stream of well engineered sounds.
Well...this is it!
I think they did a great job in letting their public know what inspires them to conceive the sounds they so well create.
The songs in this compilation range from Bossa Nova to early Latin Jazz...a truly remarkable spectrum of early sounds that planted the seed for part of what is now known as loounge music.
Free Music Review: Thievery in the Verve Vaults Hit: 5 Stars
Like everyone has said, this is NOT a Thievery Corporation album, but a compilation of music from the Verve Records vaults, put together by them. With that said, if you are a record collector that has come across countless Verve albums in the bins, and have been curious about the other artists out there, this is a perfect way to begin. The prime guilty pleasure here is bossa nova, with shades of jazz thrown in, and while you may not have heard of any of the artists covered here, many of them have not been heard since their original releases 30+ years ago. Excellent, hunt down the vinyl version as I did.
Free Music Review: Very Verve... Very Cool... Hit: 5 Stars
I love TC - but never dug Verve too awful much (huge Blue Note fan). Since TC are hip to good music I knew this disc had to have a nice flow to it. These cuts are prime and not the same ten cuts you see on every other "Verve Collection." The songs flow nicely and create perfect cocktail music. This is NOT a typical TC release - these are original songs by original artists. It is really nice to see TC pay homage to their influences. This release has really sparked my interest in Verve again - It's interesting seeing Verve trying to "cross-sell" themselves to the ESL crowd.
